Thanks Sam. Yeah when one inserts a bunch of lines it's hard to adjust every following line accordingly. i was hoping for an automatic way to do it. Otherwise it doesn't seem to bother VLC or my sub encoders, so I may live with it! Maybe a suggestion for upgrades to SubtitleEdit and Aegisub?Aegisub will re-order the lines number if you export it as an srt without ever saving to .ass, the last one ends up being 497 on that sub instead of 615.
It will also merge duplicate lines with a continuous timing so it will be a bit shorter than the original because of that(2378 lines instead of 2450 in the file).
It doesn't like the #.1 and so on that you've added though since those aren't proper lines limitors, you should just use the next number from the end of the file(or any unused number really, but would become hard to keep track of if you do that) to add lines anywhere else in the sub.
