During the past several months my computer has progressively been running very sluggish. I tried about everything I could think of or find out about but no joy! I finally decided to disable Windows Updates and uninstalled all the updates from present to until ~mid 2024. Seems to have helped immensely. I suspect that Microsoft is doing this on purpose to encourage folks to upgrade to Windows 11. I would do this but my older i7 motherboard is not compatible with Windows 11 and I will need a hardware upgrade$$$$. Trying to put it off as long as possible! This is probably not exactly a subject for this forum, but I wondered if anyone else is/has experienced the same issue.
what generation processor is it? i am having a 6th gen i7 (win 11 only supports 8th gen onward). As the processor itself is not compatible with win 11, I guess they are not trying to slow my PC down
And when I tried to enroll for extended security updates, I got it for free until October 2026.sometimes updates might slow the PC, not intentional i guess, uninstalling and re-installing them might work.
I have i7-6700 and upgraded to windows 11 in 2021 and had good results since then. There a lot of articles on how to upgrade incompatible pc's Here is one https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-t...e-windows-10-pc-to-windows-11-for-free-today/ it tells what to do with TPM, SecureBoot and what registry change is needed and other tools like rufus to help with the upgrade. Obviously it's at your own risk and take any backups of important data.
I accidently did that...I uninstalled the updates and then rebooted and Microsoft proceeded to reinstall them resulting in the same problems! So then I disabled Windows Update and removed the newly installed Updates and everything seems back to normal. Go figure???
My i7 CPU is a 2600, so quite a few generations behind! But sooner or later, I will have to bite the bullet and upgrade...SIGH! Right now it pretty well still does what I want, but it's EOL is coming! Will probably need major upgrade to keep up with all the new AI stuff out there too.
I'm sure there is no problem with Windows 11 updates...at least not until Windows 12 comes out!

I linked my windows license came with my PC to my Microsoft account, If I feel its a bit slow I just used to format/re-install windows, after login with my Microsoft account the license is back and works smoothly (I don't have much stuff to backup from the pc, and all important stuff is on the cloud, so its easier for me to do so, might not be suitable for everyone to try this as a solution). well yours is a 2nd gen processor. Have you upgraded to an SSD? As my PC is a bit older it didn't have the option to upgrade to a much faster option M.2 NVME SSD, as your's is much older I think you also won't be having that option. (but better check with your motherboard manual). Beware of PC technicians offering a M.2 NVME SSD to any PC, they just place NVME SSD in a 2.5 SATA enclosure, as it still uses the SATA bus it just works at the level of normal SATA SSD, it won't work to its full potential. you need a dedicated M.2 slot to take advantage of its full speed. ( it needs a PCIe bus). so another option is you can use a PCIe to M.2 adapter to install an NVMe SSD into a regular PCIe slot.
recently came to know that a new type of NVME options are emerging with built-in RAM on the SSD itself which could significantly improve performance especially the write speeds, this is potentially a very good thing for your work/hobby on this forum [for which, I am a big fan

, my recommendation would be just go for Linux Mint Cinnamon, nothing else. if you are not comfortable with Mint, nothing else in the linux world is gonna comfort you. Just hop back to windows with out wasting any time trying all the distros.
