My two passions are heavy metal (prog, death, black, industrial, thrash) and classical music. I'm a big fan of the pipe organ and Romantic era composers. :relax-bath:

Some of those bands:

Dream Theater
Opeth
Nile
Meshuggah
Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad
Deathspell Omega
Arcturus
Symphony X
Tool
and many more...blah blah :whisper:

I'm rockin' with Dokken! Seriously, any of the stuff from the 80's guitar gods is OK in my book.

I also like the new wave of Japanese shredders like Takayoshi Ohmura, Syu, and Satoshi Katada!

It's interesting how many people here are into metal (and the more extreme sides of metal at that). Taking into consideration the type of material most of the people that come here collect, I think it stems from our general disregard for what the "public" sees as decent.

I tend to lean towards the primal, frantic, "black" side of metal. Kult ov Azazel, Azaghal, Carpathian Forest, Svartahrid, early Immortal are among my favorites. I also really like Ambient, Folk and some classical. And since I started watching Idol videos, I've begun to like that ever-so-popular j-pop music, but only when there are beautiful young girls present!!

I agree that it's a very interesting observation, but there's no accounting for the silent members who are downloading the very same things. It could just be a coincidence that those interested in talking and interested in procuring Japanese pornography have a tendency to like the same types of music.

I don't fit the observation, either. But I could just be an outlier. :) I agree with you that this thread's gotten a heavy dose of metal replies. What sort of music do I listen to?

By Time
1. Oldies (1950s-1970s)
Things like Dust in the Wind by Kansas or My Way by Frank Sinatra or The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals or ...

2. 1980s classic rock and soft rock
Things like Journey's Don't Stop Believing, Billy Joel's Piano Man, AC/DC's She Shook Me All Night Long ...

3. 1990s-2000s select songs
Here or there, an occasional song that I like. Not really good decades for claiming a love of an entire genre (at least not for me).

By Origin
1. theme song to a TV show, song from a movie
These can be nostalgic ones like DuckTales or more recent stuff like a song from The Dark Knight. I have a ton of television and cinema music in my collection, way more than I do performing artists' stand-alone productions.

2. Culturally-embedded song
Things like the Vietnam War Song, I'm a Believer (either band's :) ), or Mozart's Symphony No.40 are heard in so many TV commercials, TV shows, and films, not to mention heard on the radio or heard being hummed or whistled by people on the street, that as a human being growing up over time one can't help but to find these songs familiar -- and familiarity tends to produce fondness.

3. Discovered on my own (or otherwise not that famous)
Songs from the Internet like The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker ~ Unplugged or United Breaks Guitars don't really fit in the other categories. They're not all that famous. They're not in films. Etc. But they're just good songs, and I like 'em so much on the first hearing that I try to find out where I can get them.

Most prominently, Chiptunes, Skramz, EBM, Ambient, Black Metal, and Neofolk.

Basically, a few overlappings of Goth, Metal, Folk, Industrial and Electronic.

I like mostly rock. I won't listen to pop or rap if it's in English. I'll listen to music in any language.

Piano Concerto/Classical (Everfades, ReSound Wave, Yiruma, Joe Hisaishi, Mozart, Bach...)
Rap (such as Kanye, Snoop a loop, Twista, Outkast...)
Underground and some mainstream hip-hop (Zion I, Swollen Members, Atmosphere, Gangstarr, J5, Sage Francis...)
Random J music like BoA, Orbital Maneuver, Nobuo Uematsu, Yui and a bunch of singles from OST's and such.
Etc....

Doesn't look like there are many fans of the rap and hip-hop genre besides me and mr. handyman, but that's ok because we rock.
