What’s interesting is that Japan may be experiencing a slow bleed rather than a sudden collapse.

The traditional JAV industry still has an unusually strong older paying customer base. Reporting on the Japanese adult industry notes that older consumers continue to buy substantial numbers of DVDs, and Japan has a sizable “senior porn” market supported by an aging population with purchasing power.

At the same time, free tube sites such as MISSAV have become heavily used in Japan, undermining the value of paying studios for access to the same kind of content.

Then MyFans adds a second source of pressure by allowing performers to monetize fans directly.

It resembles the same one-two punch that hit American porn studios:

Free tube sites: weaken the studio’s ability to charge consumers for the finished product.

OnlyFans/MyFans: weaken the studio’s role as the necessary middleman between performers and paying fans.

The difference is that Japan’s legacy physical-media market appears to have more staying power because older customers still spend money on DVDs and traditional JAV products.

So instead of an immediate collapse, the danger may be a prolonged squeeze:

piracy/free streaming erodes the value of the studio’s catalog, while direct-to-fan platforms erode the studio’s control over monetizing the talent.

It’s an almost brutally efficient sequence of technological disruption, even though it obviously wasn’t coordinated:

First, “Why should the customer pay the studio?”

Then, “Why should the performer need the studio?”

That’s how an industry can keep functioning for years while its economic foundation is gradually being hollowed out.

One possible way JAV studios survive is by leaning harder into the one advantage they still have over MyFans: they can make an unknown actress famous.

Starting directly on MyFans sounds great in theory, but there’s an obvious problem:

Nobody knows who you are.

A studio can solve that by signing promising new talent to something like a five-movie contract.

The studio provides professional production, distribution, marketing, established branding and immediate exposure to an existing audience. In return, the actress gives the studio enough movies to justify the investment they made in building her name.

After that contract ends, she can transition to MyFans with something far more valuable than she had at the beginning:

an actual fanbase.

So the career path becomes:

Obscurity → 5 JAV movies → name recognition → MyFans → direct monetization

That could actually keep studios relevant even if direct-to-fan platforms become increasingly dominant. JAV becomes less of a lifelong destination and more of a talent incubator and launchpad.

The problem for studios is what happens when MyFans eventually responds:

“Hottest New Talent.”

lol.

If MyFans develops strong enough discovery tools—featured newcomers, recommendation algorithms, paid promotion, cross-promotion by established actresses, talent agencies, etc.—then it begins attacking the final major advantage JAV studios still possess.

At first MyFans says:

“You don’t need a studio to monetize your fame.”

Eventually it could say:

“You don’t even need a studio to become famous.”

That would be the much more dangerous stage.

Studios could protect themselves with multi-film contracts and exclusivity periods, but if MyFans eventually controls both monetization AND discovery, then JAV studios risk becoming increasingly unnecessary middlemen.

The irony would be incredible:

JAV: “You still need us to escape obscurity.”

MyFans: “Meet this week’s hottest new actresses.”

That’s when the slow bleed potentially becomes a much bigger problem.

JAV films have a strange trait: they tend to cast actresses in unflattering/poorly ways, rather than showcasing their beauty to demonstrate how, despite their physical attractiveness, the actress(es) are submissive to the male’s desires, This is something noticeable especially in a Dominance genre like [Forced] Deepthroat (irrumatio).

They should dressing them beautifully and attractively, using light-makeup to highlight their beauty, and showing how, despite the external beauty, they become a service experience that satisfies the man’s lust.
I couldnt agree more. A very good analysis.
