Yep, that is the exact problem. I am opening all these in notepad, and they are coming up gibberish.

If anyone else has the zip file of 28,000+ Chinese soft subs, please check those titles I mentioned. Check snis35 and miad501, for example. I want to make sure that this isn't a problem on my end somehow.

You don't even need that specific zip file. It is just a compilation of previously posted smaller zips with Chinese soft subs. They have been posted in the substitle posting thread periodically for years. I'm sure you'll find .srts with gibberish in all of these.

My copies are find (SNIS-035 ティア.srt & MIAD-501).
It think Notepad didn't know the file's text encoding. Try opening it with Aegisub. If it looks okay, then 'Export As...' a new file. Make sure you select 'Text encoding: Unicode (UTF-8)'

Notepad is not the same as notepad++. It has less options. If they still show up as gibberish in notepad++ they're useless.

Thanks. You and mxtwo solved the issue. It loads in notepad++ showing the Chinese characters, then after I convert to UTF-8 and save, it's fine even in the regular notepad.

Weird issue. Particularly since it only happens for certain .srt's.

Yikes, I thought you were using Notepad++ that's why I wasn't seeing any issue with sample you provided

I just checked YMDD-175zh-CN from SubtitleCat and had the same problem as you -- I tried opening it with SubtitleEdit and tried few character encoding options but didn't yield to anything. I'm guessing that the original file is corruoted / miss-encoded.

Yeah, take a screenshot from Notepad++ showing what character encoding it autodetects. If you open a file with Chinese text in something like Notepad or Word it can look like anything depending on what encoding was used and what the software assumes by default.

If Notepad++ fails to detect it correctly, try a hex editor and google for the numeric value of a character

And.. I'm trying to used a font for all my subs, at once.

When I make the change the font is not apply to all the subs... Is there a way to make my font the default?

Update: I created the style I wanted... but do I have to change each... one at a time?

Hope you are well.
In regards to your question, I need some clarification.
Are you asking if you can change your default font for (A) FUTURE projects, or for (B) all the lines in a current project?
If it's A, I don't know of any way to change defaults in the program, but it's an interesting question that I will look into.
If B, if you hit EDIT, it should change all the lines of that current project.
If you want to change individual lines to a different font, just highlight the text you want to change and hit the FN key or the colors that you see there.

If I'm understanding correctly, you want to change font for ALL the lines of a single project.
If you click on EDIT, it will allow you to change the font, size, color, etc.
I don't know how to change the "Default", but I don't think it matters because if you click on EDIT and make a change that way, it will make changes to all the lines in a project. If you want to change just a few , you'd do them individually. To keep it consistent, I copy the individual line font characteristics (size, color, location, etc) and paste it into the lines I want to that way.

Try hitting EDIT first, then it will automatically make the changes to everything. (Except, I believe, the ones you have manually changed, like when I use a different color, size, etc. for internal monologues).

I try to do this myself by eye, but in the big scope of things don't really pay it too much attention because....it's porn, not Shakespeare and often times people get more turned on by the words than they get bothered by those words momentary bleeding after a screen cut.

I only use SubtitleEdit for a few, very specific functions. To be honest, I find it very hard to use for creating subs for a whole movie, so I don't even try. I use Aegisub for 99% of my projects.
