What about humiliating words like whore or slut? How is that said in Japanese, and any films where women use this term often to refer to themselves or co-stars?

Those terms are rarely used, if ever.
It doesn't really fit with the Japanese culture either, since they mostly like their women to be submissive, unless it's part of the fetish, where the woman plays the dominant part.

Rather than the woman calling herself names, you more often see her praising the man: "It's SO big/hard!"
Or they turn into a football commentator "My <xxx>/it feels so good/hurts/hot inside/you're tearing me up!" and so on.

If it's the woman saying something naughty, it's usually because the man tells her to repeat his words ("Say that you like to do <xxx>/love big dicks/want it in your <xxx>," etc.)
When it's the actor insulting the actress, it's usually along the lines of "temee" (impolite way to say "you), "kora" (basically like "look/listen here bitch), "baka onna" (dumb woman/bimbo), or "niku benki" (lit. meat toilet, or basically slut) among others.

So it's not really like American porn where the woman is the one taking the initiative with the dirty talking ("I'm a dirty little whore who wants it in my pussy, pound that shithole good" bla bla etc. :))
Since the cultures are just so different.

If you're looking for JAV like that, you'd prolly be best off searching for 淫語, or "ingo", which is dirty talk.

"SUGOI KATAKONA TERU"

what does this mean?

sugoi=good the rest I do not know
Are you sure it's written like that?
"sugoi" (凄い / すごい) mans "great" or "amazing".
But I couldn't find the other 2 words.
"teru" (てるお) can be a male first name.

SUGOI KATAKONA TERU = (in romaji) sugoi katakunatteru

You're becoming/have become amazingly/super/wonderfully/etc hard.

Katai = hard. katakunattieru is the proper way to denote a transition but the 'i' after the two t's is often dropped in casual speech.

Maybe you guys can help me with a few words in English I see in the machine translated titles, when I see these I am not sure what they mean:

OL
squid
functional
piston
soap
golden ratio

Some are kind of easy to figure out more or less based on context, but I would be interested to learn what they are supposed to mean.

Don't think this one has been covered yet:
ハメ - hame = fuck??

Example: 生ハメ中出し = raw fuck(?) creampie (HODV-20969)
Example: ギャルハメウィークエンド = Gal-hame weekend (YRH-094)

But even if I guessed correctly, I'm still a little unsatisfied, it would be nice to have the etymology also. It's katakana so presumably it has some foreign origin.

Ahhh... pinkji.sh suggests it might actually be 填める (hameru) which is kanji/hiragana, so another way to translate it could be "to stuff (an orifice)"?
(using 填 means "to fill (up)" in Chinese)

squid is a translation of the word ippai. another translation is:
soap refers to massage themed movies where the girl or "soap lady" rubs everywhere on the body with soapy water
piston is part of an engine that goes up and down over and over

In another word, "squid" is one of many example of machine-translation failure. It has nothing to do with the sea creature.

Soap is short for soapland, it's a kind of brothel in Japan. In Japan, real brothels are illegal, but there are many business establishments where a male customer can get some kind of satisfaction (usually a hand job) from a pretty girl. Soapland is a particular type where the pretense is the customer is getting a soapy bath by a nude female staff. However, unlike in real life, a "soap" JAV often feature real sex, i.e. the penis will be inserted into the mouth and/or vagina.

Piston promises you that the scene(s) of sexual intercourse would feature very intense in-out-in-out with a hopefully non-tiny penis. One might very loosely translate it into porno-speak as "gonzo".

functional
golden ratio

Functional mystifies me, if you could provide a DVD code associated with that translation, I'd be happy to figure it out.

It MIGHT be a mistranslation of "官能", so it could be "biological function", more specifically "reproductive function", but in practice it is an adjective to, e.g., literature as in "官能小説" or "官能文学", which is erotica or pornographic literature (http://sensual-art.jp). Note that erotica is often targeted towards female readers (like 50 Shades).

Golden ratio is (1+sqrt(5))/2 = 1.618... It seems in recent years, JAV studio thinks that this is the ratio of a perfectly shaped figure. Take SNIS-580 (randomly), Aoi (?)'s measurements are 92H-58-88. 92/58 = 1.586 which is not too far off 1.618. Makes any sense?

For translation purpose, I suggest keeping "golden ratio" but usually it's attached to the word body (黄金比BODY), so make sure you don't let the machine translator detach gold ratio to the word "body" or "figure".

Thank you (and others) for their kind help. Here is a link to title search containing "functional" on javlibrary, http://www.javlibrary.com/en/vl_searchbytitle.php?searchid=7575425&keyword=functional

There are many pages of results, so it seems to be a common mis-tranlation. In case that page doesn't open for you, some randomly selected codes are iesp-003, dmdk-005, dv-539.

Regarding your comments on Golden Ratio, yes that does make sense and I had assumed as much I was just wondering if there might be some deeper cultural significance. Having spent time in Japan and other parts of Asia (more than 20 years ago) I did notice of course that it is pretty uncommon for Asians to have this kind of body without elective surgery (at least 20 years ago it was pretty rare; - I understand anecdotally that in particular the typical "Japanese" physique seems to be changing in younger folks due to dramatic changes in diet resulting from western and other foreign influence - but again it's anecdotal stuff I hear around and may not be strictly true)

That confirms it, e.g. IESP-003 is 学園淫獣伝説 ~学園、官能凌辱の淫靡な世界~

Functional is a literal translation of 官能, which is probably better translated as "biological" or maybe "carnal" if you want to be a bit more biblical about it. I think it means sex without any love or emotion or even any kind of refinement or sophistication like in Kama Sutra, more like dogs.

About your view of golden ratio, absolutely I agree with you, in recent years the bust size of JAV actresses have gone huge. Last time I was personally in Japan was over 10 years ago, and walking on the streets... A-cup is the average. Somehow... I suspect the average cup size hasn't gone up so much on the streets. But there are credible reports that the actual bust size are creeping up and also Japanese men's preference has gone to more busty ladies too. I've written about this before... But anyway this is well beyond the topic of translation of AV Japanese. Let's just say, in the real Japan the bust-to-waist ratio is way way below 1.618 so it makes more sense for JAV studios to use some platonic mathematics to advertise their hot properties.

Thanks so much for the help, one less thing to be hazy on, lol. When I traveled to Asia in my Teens I was coming from Latin America, and it wasn't so much the bust size that threw me initially as the glutes, which tend to be smaller in asian women, though the Japanese seem to have gotten the best had of cards in that respect. Still compared to Latin women, it was kind of a surprise to see these women who from the front had amazing figures, great hips, thighs but when they turn sideways they almost dissappeared. Of course it didn't take me long to fall in love with the culture and especially the women and I have fantasized about asian women almost exclusively since then. Still it's pretty cool to see so many fuller figured models coming out on video these days, the big booty fetish is pretty awesome the way the Japanese do it, of course like anything it can be taken too far but the variety is awesome.

One more little thing, I understand the word we often see translated as "gravure" as in "gravure idol" means something like carved, or maybe "graven" originally? Kind of like "statuesque" maybe? is it more about having a statuesque physique or being an object of worship?

Ah... well my personal taste lies somewhere in between. Japanese butts are weak, for sure. But certain cultures do worship the gross size of the butt to a fault. To paraphrase another member, a behind so huge you can see it from the front. Just want to mention in addition to race (genes) and life style (diet), another important factor is the community standard regarding beauty. The classic Japanese beauty (even extends to men) is somewhat androgynous, women with big tits and round ass are seen as common folks and unsophisticated. Again we digress...

Gravure idol: no no you are totally wrong. Gravure refers to the printing technology used for magazines. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotogravure and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravure_idol

It's one classic example of how Japanese (more than most other cultures) love to use far-fetched allusion instead of a more literal and transparent term. E.g. to make love, even the most vanilla kind between husband and wife, is usually referred as "ecchi" which came from the letter "H" which came from the romanji "hentai" which came from the kanji "变态" which literally meant "pathological" as in "he can't even get a erection without sniffing a panty with mensural stain". The Japanese language has perfectly sensible words for "intercourse" or "making love" (actually that may be a loan word), but no... in normal usage "ecchi", with its etymology in sexual deviant, is the preferred substitute for "sex" or "make love" or "fuck".

The least remote comparison I can come up with is Victorian English, e.g. "water closet" or "may I make use of the facility here?".
