How much do you seed?

Little Chucky Hi, I'm Chucky, Wanna Play?

I was checking Utorrent and was wondering
Everytime when i haven't been to akiba-online for a while there are torrents i download so i can download the videos i want
But the the number of seeds don't match the people who have downloaded the torrent.
Is it right to assume that only a small percentage of people who download also seed the torrent data.

a torrent can be downloaded a 1000 times but when i check Utorrent there are only 200 seeders

    Are there so many freeloaders?

In my situation seeding is no problem because i have a fast connection and no data limit and my server is always uploading. (and ofcourse downloading)

I have set Utorrent so i seed 50x (was 10x) what i downloaded but sometimes i cut them of at 10x so i can seed other torrents.

Or is it because not everybody has unlimited data to up/download?

A lot of questions there and maybe I can shed some light if not answer them. For one thing it depends on your firewall and/or antivirus etc., some connection requests might be refused due to your system recognizing the source as being harmful (I believe utorrent also has its' own blocklist). Also some traffic is "bot" traffic so they aren't really seeders or peers but merely appear that way to your bittorrent client. Another matter to consider is that many people are seeding multiple torrents at the same time so they may actually only be uploading very little on any particular torrent.

Personally I don't have very fast upload speed so I seed sporadically and not always automatically when I download. It is often faster to seed one torrent at a time than to let my client seed five or six torrents at a time.
I do not seed 50x, I just download too many torrents for that. I have been know to upload at 10-1 but 2-1 is more common for me on new well seeded torrents.

I agree to Ceewan in general. But I also think that many leechers stop the torrent as soon as they get 100%. Some people are simply egoistic.
And some people are egoistic they other way round (from my experience in the Request JAV section): If the torrent doesn't start right away they say that there are no seeders. Instead of waiting some time because of the reasons Ceewan named.

No worries bro. My posts have more typos and spelling errors than I care to think about. I just couldn't resist the opportunity to rib ya.

Little Chucky Hi, I'm Chucky, Wanna Play?

As codegeek stated that its pretty egoistic if you only download and don't upload

not everybody in the world has a fast connection with unlimited data but i do believe there are too many members who download and don,t care to upload regardless if they have a fast connection or unlimited data

I,m a member of a forum where you have to upload as much as you download and it works
Everybody seeds because if you're ratio is below a certain point you must wait before you can download the torrent.

The 50x i mentioned is because i can upload pretty fast (at the moment 5,3MB 15 minites ago 8,8MB) and i want to help my fellow AO members
I know most of the members here haven,t got a fast connection and i guess they have a data limit
But it would be nice if everybody would seed 1:1 or close to that

Maybe that is one of the disadvantages of torrent: The protocol itself doesn't have a credit system like the eDonkey / eMule network. Or let's say that it is at least an disadvantage in this case / scenario.

If someone doesn't have a fast connection that person should simply limit the upload. It doesn't matter if the connections are fast or not as long as everyone gives a little bit. If there are 100 seeder and everyone offers 5 KB/s upload it's better than having one seeder offering 250 KB/s. Especially as when that one seeders gets offline for some reason there is no one left. If even 20 of 100 are going offline it's no problem.
So why do people don't seed? Now we get back to my statement: Because of egoism.

1:1 - I guess that is the absolute minimum. To spread the file it should be more than 1:1. But it would be a good start if everyone would do even a 1:1 ratio.

Well, I for one, am simply wondering how to check my share ratio. Other torrent community sites have a way to check, sometimes simply under the user's profile. I can get blind sometimes too and not see the obvious, so yea, if possible, can you help me find my share ratio? please? =P, thanks.

It is shown in your torrent client. E.g. BitTorrent has a column with the ratio shown for each torrent. If it isn't displayed just make a right-click on the table header so the context menu is shown. Then select the ratio column. That's it.

I can't even download close to that speed. My upload speed isn't even a tenth of that either. Oh well, I cuss you out of envy. You are right though, people that don't at least upload 1:1 are real inconsiderate bastards.

I will seed at 30-50k/b at first for a while..... Then I will go into 5-10k/b a sec for weeks...

Personally I try to always upload at least 1:1(and my global ratio is higher than 5:1), usually more.
But occasionally it's less if there aren't a whole lot of leechers in the swarm to reach 1:1 fast and it's a torrent I feel I need to rename for storage.
Anything that doesn't start with the DVD code in proper format gets renamed whenever I get around to batch renaming files(which is usually once per week) which breaks the torrent connection so seeding stops at whichever point it was at the time.
If it doesn't require renaming it usually gets seeded until I reformat my computer which is ~once every 6 months.

100/100 uncapped and unrestricted internet so uploading isn't ever a problem :) it's more about swarm size.

I set utorrent to seed 100% back, but that is because I have uncapped internet. Before when I had capped I had to be careful how much I seeded back.

If you have uncapped internet now, well 100% is what? 1:1? try at least to seed at least 150% or more. It just helps out a lot more. Don't just give back what was given to you, give better. That is what they mean by "Passing it on".

Agreed 100% is just minimum ,also the sites I use give you bonus points so there is incentive to keep seeding

Yeah, me too. I think the only time I seed under at the very least 150% is if it is a bad torrent (can't stand those, waste my time). Still, the beat incentive is "to pay it forward", do unto others as you would want done to you. If I am not downloading something and all my seeding is caught up, I seed (usually something that had the least amount of seeders). One good reason to comment on torrent posts here is to have a "subscription" to that thread so that you can help out with reseeding requests. This is especially important if anyone has ever done this for you, because you remember how nice it is for a complete stranger to be doing you a favor for no other reason than his goodwill to others. That is what makes this world a better place, even if it is in the overall picture a very small gesture.

    Merry Christmas

  20. I have limited bandwidth and limited usage on my connection so I can't just let things run like a seed box, but on average I seed to 200% as a minimum, sometimes more before I remove the torrent from my client.

In my personal opinion, everyone should seed to 100% as their minimum, that is, they should give back at least what they took, it's only courteous.
