problems with mp4's and Avi's

Hello everyone! this is my first thread on the site and honored to be a member here! So moving on... I've got problems with my avi and mp4 files. Only with the u 15 movies though, any special codecs that I'm unaware of? I've got the newest version of quicktime. when playing the file it gives me an error saying "could not finish initalizing the application because the file was not found" and the AVI files only play sound. Any suggestions are welcome
