AV to Celeb? Monthly income is 70,000 Yens

Riku Minato 湊莉久 retired from AV on 2018-3-19, but continue her non-AV celeb career, mainly Muscat Ebisu 1.5 and TV appearances. When she quitted she was still a bankable AV idol. Was she leaving money on the table? Or leaving behind a shameful career for something bigger and brighter?

Somehow playno1 found out her monthly income (without saying how he knows it), 70,000 yens per month. Just more than 600 USD per month. Ehhh... I think I don't need to elaborate.

But I have to say, the way you wrote it, it's not completely clear what's going on. I googled and found only one report:

She mentioned this outright on a Ebisu broadcast. While we do not know the reason for she quitting, what we do know is that shortly after she announce her retirement, she posted this on her official twitter :-

"Look, I'm legally employed, earning a proper wage and done my duty as a citizen by declaring my earnings and paying the annual income tax. Isn't it a bit harsh telling me that I'm a disgrace to the Japanese and my job isn't fit to be mentioned ? Be gentle there, will you ?"

Doesn't seem likely that she will return to AV due to her pride.​

Well ok, most people (women) can't accept a career in sex industry. As long as she can wake up everyday and face herself in the mirror, no one should be un-gentle to her.

But for most people living on 70,000 yens a month income is also intolerable. Is she independently wealthy and not caring/working for a decent income? I doubt it. Rich people talk about wealth not income. If she really living on 600 USD income, then she's a walking/talking warning sign to other AV idols to retire without a financial backup plan.

Since she stays in Muscat Ebisu, she is still talking to many active AV idols, they would be influenced by her, one way or another. One way being pride ("I don't want to swallow sperm any more") another way being poor ("I can't even live life on 700,000 yens a month").

I'm sure she got some savings to get by for now.
 
She was active for 5 years, longer than average AV career. So perhaps ... she can "get by for now". She's a grown adult, I guess whatever choice she makes is at least able to "get by for now". If I have to bet 100 yens on her life choice, I would pick (in the absence of more gossip/intel) she is gone back to living off her parents, sleep in their house, eating their food. The 70,000 yens she make is probably not even enough for the cosmetics she need to consume monthly to remain in Ebisu. But all parents are willing to make sacrifices, so they even subsidize her "job".

Is that a fact? I mean, 70,000 yen might be an okay amount even if $600 seems low (compared to what they earn in the US). I'm saying this because minimum wage where I am is about $365 (per month) and you can live your life adequately (if you only have yourself to take care of, that is). I don't know much about Japan but a salary of 70,000 yen might be totally enough to get by just fine.

she was the first named whistleblower on the coercion stuff but still kept performing, then a year later she threatened to sue the industry over the stuff they where having her do, and she had a lot of evidence to back up her, and still kept performing WITH ATTACKERS before only recently the releases stopping. It's good that ashe blew the whistle but since she's been attention seeking, threatening to sue and bring stuff down, and change the industry but she's done nothing while continuing to perform

For me it's very hard to imagine a country/region is politically developed enough to actually establish a legal minimal wage at the same time is economically so far below where I live now, min wage amount to US$3750/month if full time.

In NYC, a full time min wage amounts to US$11250 plus benefits before tax. (hot damn, the numbers are misleading... but that's a whole diff story). Tokyo isn't much cheaper than NYC, isn't much more expensive than where I live now. 70,000 yens is 18 times smaller than $11250. OK that's misleading... but it's 6 times lower income of our garbage lady (actually I am pretty sure garbage lady makes more than min wage)

A very very basic lunch at 7-11 costs absolute minimum 600 Yens. So eating at 7-11 or instant noodles for every meal, would eat up 78% of her income already. If it's my situation, I would surely choose gay porn if that's what it takes to avoid 7-11 food all month round. That's why I speculated she's being fed by her parents.

Is she living the high life? I have no idea. If she's living in Ebisu, indeed $7000 (770,000+ Yens) isn't really enough.

Ah, don't worry, I don't give out that info easily. :) But like I always say, just imagine rural Kentucky and you get the picture (at least if the show Justified does a decent job of portraying rural Kentucky...).

But thanks for clearing it up, I thought that it might have been just a case of earning less in a place where the cost of living is also cheaper, but it's not that, then.

Just to clarify, the 70,000 yen is Minato's monthly wage after she retire. Her earning is likely way larger than that during her active years.

So like residuals on her old movies or something? Or she is just part time now, taking a break.

Quite possibly from any public apperance she might engage in with loose change from her Youtube channel.

She is very unlikely to come out from retirement due to the reason stated from my post on the previous page.

JAV idols or anyone frontline (director, writers etc) don't get any residuals. There were some discussion on residuals but it's just not in Asian mindset. Boss invests and takes profits and loss. Workers put in labor and get paid upfront but own nothing. It's a whole different mindset from US/EU.

The 70,000 yens is counting only earned income, for her that's Muscat Ebisu, TV gigs (game shows, variety shows) and whatever fan events (handshaking, photo sessions etc) she can still get. I'm sure her hourly wage is well above legal minimum. That's never the problem for show biz personalities. The problem is neither getting the big gigs nor enough small gigs to lump together a decent sustainable income.

In another word, she's probably only working 3-4 days (equivalent) per month. Remember Muscat is a side show for all the girls who are getting their income from working as JAV idol. Riku Minato is alone that it's her main source of income. So Muscat schedule is very very part time.

Did she mention if she's an actual employee or just a independent contractor? 70,000 can be accurate if she's only paid during 'performances' with prep time, etc not covered. Pretty crappy, but some people want to be famous regardless of all the demerits.

Yeah... now I think I remember you mentioned it before... But can't believe the min wage is that low anywhere in your country. Most likely we are talking apple vs oranges. Which is a on-topic question because it's hard to truly understand how to live on 70,000 yens a month as a recently-retired-but-still-famous-enough-to-work-as-personality career path.
