@DexDJ and @ra5whore : well since both of you have large collection of JAVs, do you use any kind of software/method to organize your vids? or you just dump the videos all over the HDD? For collection of 7TB JAVs, what do you do when you want to find a specific videos? For me, my collection is now kind of a huge mess with many video files with no specific naming system and sometimes it's very time-consuming to find out some favorite AVs.

hey masterbet.. truth be told, it's all in the shits.. totally disorganized! hahahaha! trying to locate a specific video would be akin to lookin for a needle in a haystack hahaha! so i'd have to go through the collection 1 by 1.. the only good thing i get out of this is, sometimes, i'll chance upon a 'hey, i didn't know i have that!' vid.. anything else, it'll just drive me up the wall..

Thank you for your sharing :). @ra5whore: it's perfect that you can keep your collection like that. It's nearly impossible for me to organize my javs since my hdd is now like @DexDJ put it: totally disorganized!! :(. The only thing i have is lots of jav files with dvd code only so that i wish there is an apps out there to help me, ie when i put the dvd code in, it will look up and pull the info of that dvd to my computer (like some ebook management softwares do when you input the isbn code).

Well, i do agree with you that downloading and collecting javs have been very time consuming but somehow, many of us just can't stop it eventhough we will see like 10% of what we have dowloaded.

Clearly it's something to do in the beginning, after that it's a pain to reorganize all a collection. I've this "problem" with "some" picture set.. didn't organized them at first and now i'm too lazy to do so.

theres also the issue of translation. i practice translating with these videos although its quite difficult since they don't teach you these kanji in school but i just figured out javlibrary today. thank god! my collection is still growing in spite of my efforts to slow down. its not really for watching anymore but more of a habit which i am trying to break. i find that as my japanese skills improve, the more i watch jav. but an addiction is still an addiction, it is destructive by nature in different forms and ways you cannot see. porn addiction is a serious problem. take care of your sex drive, too much porn can actually kill it. just be aware. what happens to all your porn if you lose your sex drive? sorry for going on a tangent, just thought this was a perfect topic to introduce this problem. please take care everyone.

What JAV title teached me is that there's a bunch of word to say the same thing in japanese.. seems to be a pain to learn.

My collection is also in a bit of a mess. In the bad old days, I purchased a lot of pirated DVDs (even quite a few legit VCDs from HK and TW) I guess I must have hundreds of discs. I also have at least 150 Europorn DVDs and VCDs (mostly legit). All these are now somewhere in storage and never see the light of day since I don't have a DVD player connected. There were many good flix in there and one of these days I will have to rip and encode them onto my NAS.

I have have a big collection (about 300GB) that's stuck on my previous NAS that one of these days I have to retrieve (I think I know how to do it, but just never got around to ...) In there is my fond collection of Maria Ozawa and Takako Kitahara.

And a pile of DVD+R holding back-ups of older bit-torrents. Many are back-up of the aforementioned NAS. Same story... many are really excellent flix, but I hardly ever go thru them and re-watch them.

My current (2nd) NAS is holding only the downloads from past 2 years or so... Already 250+ titles. That's also a measure of my downloading pace...

Since starting my own JAV database software, I have finally developed my own approach to JAV collecting:

Every few days (weeks), I would browse JAVZOO to scan for recent releases. If I am busy in a period, I might skip a month between browsing, but that's ok, you won't miss a good JAV. Also for a few particular actresses I kind of keeps tabs on their monthly releases, and irregularly I might do a search by genres. Most of these I perform on JAVZOO, but sometimes I check out releases on 3xplanet, as I notices sometimes 3xplanet release a good JAV that's not found on JAVZOO.

DMM and R18 I understand is more "authoritative" but R18 is not comprehensive at all, and DMM is a hassle to access. Anyway JAVZOO covers most of the info found on DMM.

So that get me the JAV codes that I decided to get. I also save the cover image from JAVZOO (which is hot-linked from DMM anyway) Next is kickass.to, usually the DVD code will give me a torrent there and for a new release, the bittorrent is completed within an hour. Sometimes I do have to come to Akiba Online, but not often.

Then I move the file from the BT location to the JAV folder(s), stripping off any extra files. I go back to JAVZOO to get the Japanese title and Google Translate it, fixing it to my satisfaction. Then I crop the cover image to make a poster (typically 300x412 pixels) with .tbn extension (XBMC convention) then rename the the movie file into this format:

DVD-code English Title optional actress name.EXT
e.g. PPPD-340 Her Sister Big Tits Creampie Seduction Julia.mp4

The actress name is skipped if there are more than 3 actresses

Then it's done. On XBMC I found most commonly I browse by file date (the date the movie was downloaded) or by filename (therefore sorted by DVD code).

For uncensored vids, I also apply the same process but it's slightly more time-consuming since they often lacks DVD covers so it's more troublesome to make a poster/thumbnail. But I kind of insist on it, since uncensored vid lacking a cover image will almost never get watched so why keep it on the NAS?

I have retroactively applied this naming and thumbnail convention to all the vids on my current NAS. Next... is for the next post...

Ok what I want to do with my collection:

Keep no more than 500 vids on the NAS that should keep it around 1.5TB. It's not as if HDD is expensive, but honestly would I need more than 500 vids at fingertips? The 500 goes roughly:
200 JAVs best (my fav) of all times
100 JAVs recent downloads from past 12 months
100 Europorn best of all times
100 rest (including recent Europorn downloads)

The rest (not kept on NAS) backup to HDD or DVD+R. I guess backup to HDD is going to be main trend. So I might attach a HDD dock to the set-top box and if I feel like watching a backup I just pop the right HDD on the dock and away it should go.

I might even rip the DVD's on HDD (without bothering to encode them) and XBMC will play them just as seamlessly too. Of course some of these DVDs belongs in the 'best ever" category so I do have to encode them and store in the NAS.

Then comes the problem of tracking the backups. I need a master database, I need to be able to search by DVD code, title, actress, release date and genre. And the database should tell me if it's on the NAS or the name of the backup disc (e.g. JAV2014-02). Ideally it should be no more than 2 more button clicks to play the vid. Also since it's not easy to keep track of the actress names, one should be able to browse actress by face. Also the semi-official genre categorization on DMM is pretty good, but it would be nice to augment that with the user's labelling... i.e. tags.

XBMC would be great for this except I don't know how well it handles removable media.

The reason I go into this long discussion is to see if more people can come to some consensus how to manage their collections. If I am on my own there's much less motivation for me to get any more serious about it. Which is part of the reason why I've slowed significantly on my own JAV scrapper. It's 99% done but to iron out all the kinks is draining and if I'm the only user there's less drive to get it to 100%.

@ding73ding: couldn't agree more with you that the whole problem here is DATABASE. Couple a week ago, i have started to index my JAV collection by a quite manual ways:

- Each movie (dvd) will be put in a separate folder with 3 or 4 files: movie file, cover, screenshot, and subtitle (if available).
- Maintain the database of indexed files by an excel sheet which included the info: dvd code - dvd title - actress(es) - producer - genre - tags - rating - link. Those info are mostly taken at javlibrary. (see my attached image)

I only do this indexing job on my spare time and up to now around 100 dvd have been organized by above way. My collection starts to make sense when i can now filter the collection by specific factors: like actress, genre...

I have probably amassed a large sizeable collection of movies and videos (both US and Japan) and backed them up on dvds, and with movie files becoming larger, the number of dvds are becoming more and more, and I think its time for me to convert the collection into external HDDs for better access and organising.

I'm considering of getting 2TB each for my US collection and Japan collection, and if needed additional storage, just buy another in future. Most of my current HDDs are Buffalo and has no problems at all( all still running), but it's becoming a little difficult to find that brand around, so I bought a 1TB Seagate few months back and still works fine (no problems...yet).

So my question to you guys is: which external HDD do you use for your movie storage? which is most reliable/any problems?
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have about 2GB on zip disks. I recently upgraded from a 5 1/4" floppy drive and got a 14400 baud modem from my garage sale funds.
My GIF collection is massive! If you want any nice pics of Kramer or Gillian Anderson let me know!

Ugh... been there done that. Over the years I have made exactly that type of Excel sheet no less than 4 iterations. Each time, I would keep at it for a few months and it gets large and then I get tired of it. One factor that's discouraging is the multiplicity of performer's names, both in Japanese and especially English translations.

I suppose I can adapt my Python scraper to export CSV file that Excel can read. Would you be interested in using that?[/user]

It would be great if you can export your database to CSV and share with us :D. It seems that you have quite a lot of experience in dealing with massive JAVs. From your post i understand that you're using XMBC and a kind of scraper to index your javs, would you mind sharing more detail on how you are using them? (set up the folders, import to XMBC,....). I store all my jav on portable HDD, so is it possible to use XMBC?? (sorry if the question sound stupid since i am not familiar with these media center software)

Thanks!!

I am no expert of JAV. I just been a consumer for many years. And I'm a semi-pro programmer, so I can do a lot of things with code (but not good enough to write release-quality software).

Let's just say I can be sure that for every single country on Earth, there are at least one vid in my collection is illegal. So no, I am not gonna disclose my own database with anyone. What I can give you is even better, it's a Python script, (if you can learn how to use a Python program from DOS prompt) you can feed it all the DVD-codes you have (e.g. ABP-060) and it will create (or add to an existing) CSV file the data entries for each vid. Mind you, I haven't started writing the CSV part of the program yet. Since I can't be sure there are actually any users of such a program and I am kinda busy you know.

About XBMC, in this day and age, there is just no excuse (other than pig-headed stubbornness) not to use some kind of media center software if you watch vids more than once a week. My absolute fav is XBMC but you can go with your preference. XBMC handles removable media and portable HDD smartly, no worries there. There is also no need to set up folders or import anything to XBMC, whatever habit you established for yourself under Windows (or whatever), XBMC would work with it, 'cuz, it's quite OK to run XBMC as if it's a pretty-looking File Explorer for vids and music. Once you decide it's an workable upgrade from File Explorer, then we can discuss advanced features such as database and scrapper.

Why don't you give it a try? Before you invest too much time in Excel or Python or any re-inventing the wheel kind of thing?

I just found out it's been rename Kodi since ver 14. I have been using ver 12 and 13 (Gotham) on my Android boxes, but just installed ver 14 (Kodi) on a new fanless quad-core SSD Win 8.1 PC. First impression is Kodi's as smooth as it was how it was way back on the original Xbox (it's a compliment, really!) except it's playing FHD vids with multi-audio tracks, subtitles etc.

But for us old-timers, the name "Kodi" lost all connection to Xbox, it's sad.

I've been trying XMBC/Kodi together with a scraper and i have to say that it's really a time saver. I can now index my whole collection within few clicks!
