7-0 is pretty brutal. I missed the Brazil vs. Ivory Coast game yesterday because I was hanging out with my dad on Father's Day. When I found out the score (3-1), I told my dad about it, and he said something along the lines of:
Well, these European teams probably don't want to or can't humiliate the African teams too much. So they win comfortably but they hold themselves back. They don't play aggressively and turn it into 4-0, 5-0, 6-0 games.
Well, Dad may have been right, but if so, I guess it means that Portugal has
zero qualms about squashing the North Koreans. Because they totally did.
7-0 is both the highest score I've ever heard of a single team achieving (
7 points!?) as well as the biggest gap in scores between teams I've ever heard of before (again,
7 points!?). Part of me is like "Wow, that's amazing!" But a bigger part of me is like, "Wow, Portugal, you guys don't have as much class as the Brazilians do. :|" If Brazil had wanted to score 4, 5, 6, 7 goals on the Ivory Coast, I believe that they could have. But they held back. Out of politeness. So as to not totally shame or embarrass the Ivory Coastmen.
Portugal, though ... no qualms. You don't score seven goals in 90 minutes without
really wanting to.
Kudos to Portugal for their skill, but boo to Portugal for their lack of self-restraint. :|
