Not as bad as you might think, but it can be tricky once you get out of the major cities. Heck, in my personal experience, even some of the major-ish cities aren't exactly used to international tourists. IIRC, the staff in the Wakayama tourist office couldn't really speak English, and were surprised by an English speaking tourist showing up to ask about stuff. Wakayama isn't exactly a major tourist destination but its not really off the beaten track either.

Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Sapporo, etc. essentially the major tourist cities you can get by just fine without being able to speak any Japanese at all. Most places will have signs in English, there are apps to help you navigate the confusing metro system (notably Tokyo's and their ridiculous network), many restaurants have English menus. For everything else, there's Google Translate. Actually, use DeepL instead.

Unless you want to dabble in nightlife - than you need to speak some of the language. And you need to be aware of the scams. Thank goodness the govt kicked out all the black folks from Kabukicho. No, nothing racist about this. If you've been to the Kabukicho over 10 years ago, the red light district was full of black touts and pimps hired by the Yakuza to pull in customers. These assholes were incredibly pushy and aggressive to the point of being very annoying. You couldn't walk down the streets at night as a guy without being accosted by one of them and asked if you're looking for a girl. They will grab onto you and refuse to let go for a while. I even had to threaten to shout once if they won't let go. The Yakuza loved hiring them cos of this. They thought their own Japanese touts were too passive and polite. But the tourists kept complaining about them so the police eventually booted them out. Good riddance.

Oh, and do watch the videos on YouTube about the scams before you go. Basically, be wary about anyone who tries to approach you offering to take you to a place to go drinking. Do not go into any bar or izakaya that looks dodgy and doesn't have a crowd. Be wary of pimps in the street offering to find you girls. They typically won't actually be Japanese. Do your own research if you want to find some fun, but this isn't the board for this.

Nice, good to know that you had fun. But you actually did pay way more than market rate although I suspect you are already aware of that.

Like I said, THC is good for an easy experience for foreigner but you pay through your nose for the service.

Now that you have a bit more confidence and experience, you could try more independent services.

BTW, the amount you paid in total for Mio (and not including the video option)...you could have gone to a premium soapland instead - even with the gaijin surcharge. That might actually have been a more worthwhile experience.
