I'm glad to hear that they will be implementing some kind of jury system there eventually. It always astounded me that out of all the ways we influenced/"democratized" Japan, juries didn't make it on the list of reforms.

In America, porn that deals with r*** is very, very rare. There seems to be alot of that in Japan and these videos even star some of the most popular JAV stars. r*** is a horrible, horrible thing in real life. However, the amount of r*** related porn in Japan probably has more to do with the culture allowing more freedom in entertainment, than in the fact that Japan has a lot of rapists.

I don't think there's necessarily more freedom in Japanese adult entertainment (censorship and all), but I will grant that there's a cultural difference where the idea of the "innocent" girl (hence r*** as a common plotline) is more popular in Japan than in America where people prefer to think of girls as being whores (there is nothing "slutty" about r***). Still, the way I see it, the whole issue of r*** is that it degrades a woman's value; in Japan, they represent that idea by developing complex storylines like r***, and in America, they do the same but by vulgarity of sexual acts like gangbangs.

Of course it's true that Japan has much crazier JAV themes, but it doesn't really concern r*** so that's a different matter.






Also, a little research has pointed me to this report on crime trends compiled by the UN. Looking at the report "Sorted by Country", in 2002, the United States had about 32.99 reports of r*** per 100,000 people, while Japan had 1.85 reports per 100,000 people. Of course some people say as much as 90% of r*** in Japan goes unreported, which would raise the number of cases to 18.5 per 100,000 -- still less than in the US, which if you add in the 60% that experts believe are unreported in the US, would increase to 82 per 100,000.

r*** is difficult to prosecute in every country, and Japan's legal system simply happens to make it even harder. In America most r***s are not reported, and most r*** accusations are not prosecuted. But the fact that many are prosecuted despite an acquittal is significant because it's a result of accusations being taken more seriously. However, if prosecutors were generally required to get confessions in the US, both police and prosecutors would be far less motivated to do anything about the majority of claims.

While the points about r*** in American porn are valid, that's not the reason why American porn doesn't frequently portray r***. It's simply taboo from a business stand point, when congressional hearings and convictions on obscenity have been had for far less. Outrage prevents a lot of things from happening. So like Russia they use substitutes, such as gangbangs, to fill the niche.

Maximum Hardcore was prosecuted repeatedly for obscenity, and despite failed prosecutions and some counts being dropped (cp being the main one), he eventually was convicted. Many Americans have been prosecuted for far less, including fairly harmless parody cartoons.

Official stats on cancer in Japan used to show the same huge discrepancy - cancer was almost non-existant until recent decades. This was not a result of people being practically cancer free, this was a result of doctors lying to their patients in cases where treatment was unlikely to save them. While that's changed over the decades, you still have doctors who refuse to tell a patient when he's dying. If someone needs surgery, they'll often tell you to get it but not why.

I don't think you can draw any conclusions from the stats given. You could pick any number you wanted for the unreported ratio to get the results you wanted.

These studies are almost useless. Every study which asks men and women how may opposite sex partners they've had in life never adds up. Either men are lying and padding their number, or women are lying and downplaying it, or both. Probably the first case. This is an example of a study which actually proves the study itself must be wrong.

Every study deserves its fair share of scrutiny, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them worthless. The point is whether or not Japan really deserves such a stereotype of being a land full of rapists.

There have been numerous reports that have tracked significant decline of sexual abuse in multiple countries (including Japan) from since they respectively introduce adult material. Japan's adult entertainment industry certainly goes further than "standard Western porn", but as Western cultures tend to disassociate trends of r*** from adult material, it hardly seems justified to revert that association merely on the basis of perceived vulgarity.

"We have porn, but it's not r*** porn, so there's no connection to real r***. You have porn too, but a lot of it is r*** porn, so you must all be rapists." Forgive me if I can't seem to accept the hypocritical assumptions made therein.




I'm not saying Japan is a perfect nation -- there are definitely problems that need to be addressed. But if you consciously choose to ignore what data there is and instead rely on your own assumptions, you set a dangerous precedence for ignorance, negative stereotyping, and eventually racism.
