Newbie needs help to understand

I like this site a lot and am finding out many things just by wandering around and reading, but I have a request. I have been looking for a thread that would function as a sort of glossary. There are a lot of terms peculiar to your hobby that I do not understand. For instance what is cosplay? Another question I have is the difference between hentai, anime, and manga. I figured out JAV and IV but what is an Idol as opposed to a JAV star? And of courrse the big one what is doujinshin? (I don't think I spelled it correctly.)

If one of you knowledgeable senior members could put together a glossary thread, I would appreciate it as would other noobs I am sure. Or maybe it already exists and I am just too stupid to find it. In that case could you point me in the right direction and enjoy a good laugh about ignorant newbies at my expense.

That's an interesting idea.

I won't embarrass myself by trying to explain the difference between hentai, anime & manga, but cosplay is literally costume play, where the idol dresses up in various costumes such as a maid or character from a popular anime.

Now I'll pass the baton.

As for the JAV & IV idols, very simple. JAV stars are japanese pornstars. IV idols (also known as gravure idols) are Japanese models who primarily pose in bikinis, leotards, and other provocative clothing for photo spreads in magazines and photobooks aimed largely at men. Fetish themes may include wrestling, martial arts, and Superheroines from tokusatsu. Some idols also pose nude or perform sexually explicit acts in their work. In short, the biggest difference between JAV stars and gravure idols is, JAV stars do sex in the movie, while the gravure idols don't.
