Is it safe to download from Akiba-Online?

I got a letter from my ISP saying that I was sharing illegal content. Now, I'm not sure if this was because of downloading from Akiba-Online or it was because of Downloading from Torrents which I do quite often. From what I know, downloading from file sharing sites is pretty safe but I was just wondering...

Ahhh , so good to be in Europe and laugh at you :D

But on a more serious note ... it's most likely due to torrenting music or movies. I don't believe they'd bother someone for downloading porn , thats laughable.

It was probably for sharing a tv show. I don't think JAV studios care as they tend to only see Japan as their target audience anyway.

Don't know what part of Europe you're from, but wasn't there a huge porn ban in the UK just a few months ago.

UK is a different thing. I was talking about continental Europe.

I myself often change living place between eastern and western europe , and i've never even heard about someone geting in trouble because they downloaded stuff.

Before we do any laughing at others, let's find out the actual jurisdiction involved. Europe has a lot of curious sexually-related prosecutions too.

The keyword might be "sharing", meaning you are sending out something "illegal", and what's "illegal"? Is it about copyright infringement (the new Avenger movie), or about sexual mores (despite the mosaic, many JAV violates some local morality laws pretty much the whole world over).

Check your torrent client maybe you want to reduce your share ratio.

Also don't get too worked up over an unfriendly email from your ISP (instead of your friendly Department of Justice or FBI). Most likely you have a choice of ISP's in your area. If your ISP is being a prick, just take your business elsewhere.

There's a very good chance that the threatening word (illegal) is just a veil to cover the ISP's true motive of profit making. They want most of their customers to pay for high speed internet but not use much bandwidth.

Anyway you are hardly downloading anything from AO. AO hosts a forum and only a tiny amount of media, we are mainly just leeching DD links and torrents.

And I doubt the JAV studios truly don't care. They just lack the means to enforce their claims.

You ISP will forward to you any claim they get that your specific IP was seen sharing copyrighted content.

Sharing means you're uploading and not simply downloading the content so you won't get such a thing from downloading from a direct download link.
You will usually get those notice from using a p2p software(like torrents) to download something that is monitored by someone who cares about copyright, usually a western movie studio or media company.

Using a VPN will usually prevent those since most won't forward those notice back to you and as long as they don't share their IP data, it won't be traced back to you.

Japanese companies are much less litigious than western one so you're much less likely to get a notice like this from stuff you got from here.
We do get DMCA takedown notices from time to time and we respect those, which is this list here: https://www.akiba-online.com/threads/do-not-upload-list-updated-march-2024.14313/ but as you can see it's not a very big list.

We don't host copyrighted content directly here so it's mostly the direct download sites that receive the takedowns and some might go directly after uploaders who clearly disregard the takedowns and continuously re-upload their stuff(which is usually how things end up in the banned list here).
