Like so many I grew up with porn on 8mm loops and then VHS tapes and got hooked on the usual Color Climax and Rodox shorts and the late 60s/early 70s Scandinavian gear that was usually very naturalistic and sexy.
Then the great waves of US porn from the 70s with all those lovely girls with long hair (on their heads and around the crotches). It is true that many many films were made and performers did them not merely for money - which was not very much - but for the celebration of a certain lifestyle, witness people like Susan Nero and Annie Sprinkle to name but two.
From the 1980s on modern porn has left me cold with two glorious exceptions - JAV of course which is my passion but also Italian porno, which has some of the same erotic and fantasy qualities in JAV. The Dutch studio Oldje is good as it features lovely young girls and dirty old men - again with real long kissing sessions. Which I like. Apart from that, it is JAV for me.

I would second Jack1956 and say check out Mario Salieri's Italian porn, much of it is story/situation driven, uncensored and with some of the hottest talent ever, some of it has even crossed over to JAV, with JAV studios releasing censored versions of his work (i.e. 1945 Predi di Guerra - can't remember which jav studio code is the equivelant - but get the uncensored one if you can). Some of the actresses as well such as Gina Gerson have done some JAV titles (avop-158). In particular look for the the Mondo Fiamme and Band of Bastards series, kind of hard to find but when you find it you will be glad you did. On a slightly more hit-and-miss basis other French and Italian directors have some pretty high quality productions but also tend to release a lot of the usual western stuff, all-sex, no story, bad acting, etc.
Speaking of Italian porn, my favourite western porn movie is the original, uncut version of Mai Dire Mai a Rocco Siffredi from 1995. Throughout it features Perla Mazza, a gorgeous young woman from a very wealthy Italian family. It was her first and last appearance in porn - in the last scene alone, she takes on dozens of men, getting anal, DP, bukkake, golden shower, drinking piss and swallowing cum. Her family was reportedly upset when they found out about this movie, which is perhaps understandable. Good for us their daughter is so wild though because it resulted in a great movie, and that last scene in particular is incredible.
