Hi guys. Do you guys and your JAV collection reside in your labtop/computer or do you like a portable hard drive?

I am wondering because I have some on my labtop I easily can access which are usually the favorites and the harddrive I will have the favorites again plus the rest. Do you guys use 1 hard drive? 2 hard drives?

Also, do you guys encrypt your videos / folders ? Or do you just leave them?

I have 2 external hard drives I use but i am always worried my brother or someone will use it without knowing i have so many videos on there. But I also think it will take a long time to encrypt so many files, does anyone know of a fast way to just put a passsword on the whole hard drive as a whole ? or will it take days because of the size of the files?

My JAV is stored across 6 hard drives (3 external, 3 internal) all of which are encrypted using VeraCrypt/TrueCrypt. It takes a while to encrypt (just let it encrypt overnight) but it's well worth the time.

Another solution would be using a NAS instead of many USB drives. You can user & password protect the shares (if you're using SMB/Windows).
In addition you can put your drives in a RAID (like RAID 1, 5, 6). That doesn't replace a backup, but at least increases the protection against data loose (also such RAID levels are not meant as backup, but as improvement of the availability).

Those are kind pricy, no? But I guess you're paying for the security.
There are also cheaper models. Or let's say: There is a wide variety of models. But, yes, it's more pricy as normal USB drives. But normally you also get more for your money (e.g. some provide a downloader software and/or a torrent client - if that's interesting for you. Or a media server).

hmm thanks for information above - i was thinking truecrypt - i have axcrypt but it only encrypts single files - does truecrypt encrypt like full folders with files within it?

also the NAs / Raid thing is probably out of my knowledge of how to do things

@cas, i do disconnect hard drives and hide them, but it's for a back up incase someone grabs them or i need to bring them with me somewhere (sometimes to work) - i don't want to expose my whole collection and people to judge me -

i don't even want to encrypt it, i just want a simple password when you plug in the external hard drive and then be able to view everytrhing all videos without putting in a password for each video to watch

but is ok, i might purchase those 'WD passport things , i heard they come with a program to put password on the drive ' but am not sure.. might just use truecrypt then.

thankis for replies

Veracrypt/Truecrypt can encrypt your entire hard drive or you can just make a volume (sort of like a folder) and just encrypt that so anything you put in that volume will be password protected.

Development stopped on Truecrypt, didn't it? I know we no longer use it at work because support for it went away. Then there's this article that says it is "discontinued".

But here is a simple method if others you worry about are not all that computer savvy! Use at your own risk. Although it looks very straightforward. Provided you're a PC and not a Mac user.

I have two 4tb external hard drives. I use the second one to backup what son the first. I just did that recently and it's comforting to know I have my entire collection backed up. I don't encrypt it, I don't have to worry about anyone going through my stuff.

A 2TB external hard drive at the moment. My JAV collection isn't huge. Mainly storing a bunch of the SIRO titles. Just enough to keep me happy. :D

What is a good way to sort a massive DVD-R collection for quick access of catalog numbers?
For example, finding ASDF-005232 in a collection of 3000 discs.

The usual 200+ DVD storage case is too slow, even when you put them into alphabetical order.

My idea is to use either jewel cases or paper sleeves with numbers on a tab or something, then have a master index printed.

Any other ideas? I can't rip them all because I would need a 30000TB hard drive.

Right now I have them stacked on spindles in alphabetical order. Sometimes it takes up to 5 minutes just to find a specific title.
It also degrades the disc much faster and I get too many scratches.

For my mp4/download collection I use a 2TB Raid 1 setup and then back that up. 2TB is not enough lately so I got another 2TB external eSATA drive. Thinking of driving USB 3.0 but I imagine it might be slightly slower.
USB 2.0 stinks when you have to back up a huge collection!

I'm really picky and rarely keep anything if it's not good. I'm not a huge JAV collector unless it's specific genres I like.
I actually buy DVD originals still since i'm picky about quality and you can rarely find JAV ISOs.

If it's all blu-rays you've got you would need 14 HDDS of 5TBs at most. And that should be a cheap solution for you if you realy have 3000 discs.

Edit: The drives would cost arround 2200 euro, but you can get a nice discount for buying such quantity.

Best price doesnt always mean the best deal. Quality and reliability also play their role.
The software drivers have more bugs than a log full of termites. The biggest and most fatal gig is the failure of the software to remember the Samsung Safekey. I put two months on one of these drives and started to sweat when the software started this constant flow of error messages. Finally, I said "chuck it" and tried to recover a saved directory. I cut and pasted the Samsung Safekey to the point of rage. This drive doesn't work; the software doesn't work. Avoid like the plague.
