Why do so many JAV stars start late in life?

I usually try to find and note the age of an actress. I have noticed many seem to have started when they were in their 40s or 50s. I think a career in western porn would be pretty much over by then. Why would this be?
BTW, I generally find the older JAV stars to be very attractive. I always found older women attractive; not so much now that I'm pushing 80.

I think it may be that some women find their sexuality later in life- maybe were married and now want to experience some freedom. My favorite, Chisato Shoda did not start until she was around 35, was divorced and had a child. I believe in all cases, somewhere along the way someone who knew them encouraged them to do this. In any case, they all knew they were attractive enough to feel they could turn men on by watching them.

I believe that most are prostitutes that use porn to get men to visit at those escort clubs. I use to believe they were moms and stuff from reading the the information and stuff, but there could be many reasons for a women to join. Like paying off debt.

Porn is just a business - if there is demand amongst customers for watching in movies mature actresses, playing roles of mature (Jukujo) mothers, aunts and mother-in-laws - there is no need to start at 20 years old (like did Yumi Kazama).

Many good porn actresses, starting in their ripe age of forties - were earlier gravure idols, working in dancing studios or night clubs, not necessarily as prostitutes.

Some are coming in porn business only for 3-5 years and then retiring (like Yuuko Kuremachi), some others are playing longer time. Like Marika Kobayashi, Minako Kirishima, Eriko Miura...

As others have said, there's just a market for it. You have an ageing population thats projected to grow even older in the coming years with roughly 30% of the population already aged 65 and over. So naturally you have a growing fanbase and genre that is also diversifying in terms of the age range of the actresses.

The other aspect by this question is - you could never know about REAL age of the JAV actress!
(Of course - maker/studio is responsible that actress REAL age is at least 18+ years minimum.)

Let's take per example one of my beloved actress - Iroha Narumiya.

But we could find from that her personal page in minnano-av.com that she started her career in porn industry
under name Mai Henmi on 2010 (and retired with that name on 2013).
When opening Mai Henmi's personal blog - one could find out that she claims her personal data as follows -
born 1989 (so - being 21 years old at start on 2010).

I have watched her early movies - and she does not look there so young as 21 years old.
Then - she tried to be younger her real age.

My guess is that she was older - about 26-28.

Now, after retiring on 2013 she came back on business on 2015 under name Iroha Narumiya,
as MATURE actress, born on 1977 (12 years older than herself - as Mai Henmi!)

Here one could see her wish to show herself now younger and more fresh for relatively OLDER actress.

I think she is not 49 - maybe 42 years old max in real life.
Look at her body - still firm tits, like a schoolgirl, no wrinkles at all.
