For web I use Firefox with the noscript addon, my AV is ESET Smart Security which has worked well for me for a while now. OS is win7 x64.

Avast, Spybot: search & destroy, Malwarebytes and one or two others, along with using Firefox and noscript.

All rather easy to manage, update & configure: and in my book far better than the over-rated bloat of the big boys like Norton & Sophos

What I use

As an IT bod, I use Comodo, AVG free, CCleaner, & Malwarebytes.

Tips: Just get the Firewall part of Comodo, don't worry about the warning from AVG about compatability, never had any probs, I also disable linkscanner in AVG, Firefox does that in a less intrusive way.

Used collectively you should never have any problems.

based on my experience of getting viruses (or nastier worms) since i got my hands on computers, softwares are only a complement and added security.. there are really only three practical ways of me getting a viruses / worm and here's what i would do to prevent them or to the least minimze my risks

1. script in a site
which you can prevent it with adding noscript plugin on firefox.. this disable like all interactive websites but once you turn it off, its your call and your risk, so only make exception on site you trust and browse carefully... always for example checks for legitimate URLs that make sense.. i wouldn't easily trust a URL that reads "free-sexy-movie-download.info" and the link doesn't lead to a forest of sublinks of /words/words/words/words/words/stuff.html

2. physical removable medias
USB sticks, memory cards, PSPs, you name it! this is which responsible for like more than 7 out of 10 cases i got comin from this.. the way to prevent this is simple, you would want to consider sharing USB sticsk are like sharing condoms

only put USB sticks you use personally this is your best chance to avoid viruses that spread from phsyical media.. upload/email files that are from media you got from others using other computer and download them into your personal computer is the safest way to transfer files from risky physical media (unless the file you wanted is infected in the first hand) and of course like condom, try not to share this on public computers or those that are accessible / used by alot of ppl

3. files you download
that said nuff.. only download from sources you trust, if you are dl ing from something like torrent.. see comments and read what ppl say, if alot of them saying "WTF DUDE! YOU GOT ME INFECTED" and the next 20 ppl says "SH*T" then you know what to do.. not being the first is a good thing for me :)

i'd say i did this as a habit now and when you do it properly you shouldn't even need a firewall or antivirus (which i don't reccomend anyway since another extra layer of defence is always a good thing) this however would very very greatly prevent the anti virus from kicking into action in the first place which is much better than curing your computer

Security is something I take seriously but not as seriously as I have in the past. This topic is likely in the Chatterbox section and not in the Technical section because it is one of general interest. But individual computer security measures should be based on specific as well as general threats. It is actually a very personal matter based on who uses your computer, the information stored on it, surfing habits and any number of odd details. P2P security measures would be different from those who refrain from this practice. Those who pay their bills online and do other financial transactions such as stock trades or banking with their personal computer would desire a more rigid security than those who just use their pc to dowload porn and watch youtube videos.

I personally would not reccomend security suites or all-in-one packages. This is not to say they are ineffective but that they are on the whole weaker than a diverse package of check and balances from different specialist software companies. Thinking one company is best at everything when it comes to software is a mistake. Every company has its' specialties. Windows and Linux specialize in operating systems. If you think they know best how to guard these operating systems from harm then perhaps you should keep abreast of their security updates and how often they are needed.

I would suggest a third party firewall that is designed to watch over these operating systems and that is all it does and all it is meant to do. Same thing with an Antivirus program. There are software companies that specialize in this and I would not expect any antivirus that can bypass your firewall to be protected by the company that made that firewall in the first place. I am not saying that this is impossible but that I would prefer a program that has a different perspective on the situation should I accidently come across or download a virus. I will note that it is important to find programs that work well together but I have rarely found that to be a problem. That is my take on it anyway.

What security software do I use? Pretty simple and basic stuff ATM. I currently use the Firefox browser, (which I consider to be a part of my security package), which I alter to meet my security means depending on where I surf and what I am surfing for. I change firewalls from time to time depending on my mood and opinion of what is currently available. I use Spybot but probably do not need to, I just like the extra protection. I am currently using Avira Antivirus because it is one of the better free antivirus programs out there but sometimes I change antivirus programs too. I use Peerblock because I download torrents and it gives me added protection. I use Tor often when I surf the net, it actually acts as another firewall in addition to its' anonymity bonuses. All the security software I use is free. I also use at least one firewall router, it is a cheap and effective means of adding further security to any pc.

Of course opinions and individual success on pc security will vary but this is my two cents on the subject.

Ciao.
