I've dreaded this day.
I mean, I knew it would come some day but when it does come,
it hits you. More than you can ever imagine.

And so, I say goodbye to my 4TB collection of JAV and hentai.
4TB of torrenting, stupid catchpas and babysitting those downloads in Jdownloader.
That neatly indexed archive sorted by actress name.
All those moment will be lost...like tears...in rain.

C'est la vie.

You're gonna regret it and you will never get it back(and I mean it as stuff outside of 3 months gets harder to find by the month). I never understood why people do this stuff.

I feel you man (or rather, ages later this is something I can sympathize with!)

In 2020 one of my external hard drives decided to commit suicide, quite suddently and without warning.

This hard drive was not only the most complete and comprehensive collection of porn accumulated since 2002 online (back in the floppy disc days!) - be it mainstream USA-Canada-Foreign(Europe) porn, but also amateur material (including complete collections of amateurs who have since disapeared and erased all their stuff), as well as 3-D animated porn, shemales and other TS-oriented stuff, but also my own porn which I had been shooting since the previous hard drive suicide (the 1st one was back in 2012).

After the 2020 hard drive disaster, I decided that my years (decades?) as a porn archivist were over. I even threw away my dozens upon dozens of CDr/DVDr folders from the pre-external drive days, hundreds upon hundreds of discs also now long gone.

Following suit was my VHS porn collection: sometime between 2008 to 2016 an aquaintance asked me to help him move a collector's VHS collection he had been storing since the eighties. My payment was I could keep as many of these VHS taps as I wanted. I only had room for about 100 so I chose those rarest ones, including films dubbed in french which were distributed in Quebec (Canada) but never in the US so never released on digital nor DVD, and "did not exist" in the porn databases online.

Needless to say that these also included films which were not taken off the market in that 1986 FBI mega-case: the controversy did not reach Canada until later so many VHS rental stores never took those off the shelves until the arrival of newer titles or DVDs.

... And that Roy Batty quote is the one I use EVERY TIME I post a random "salvage" post on my blog (before throwing away those CDrs and DVDs I spend a weekend randomly uploading stuff on my blog which I release once in a while just to remind everyone of the countless forgotten gems unavailable online anymore which I had to get rid of...)

So peace be with you comerade (or cammarade as some say here in Qc), I feel that pain...

Why though?

After the 2020 external hard rive "s u i c i d e " I realized that my physical (and virtual) collection was strictly that: a collection. The only value it really had was to my own self, and there was the question of how/when can one actually "enjoy" all this porn, unless one has no job and lives alone and can spend 18 hours a day just looking at porn.

I attempted to get in touch with people interested in those ultra-rare (artifacts) VHS tapes but ultimately the very little response I did get did not proved to have any real serious inquiries.

There is also the "space" factor. The threat of being evicted is a constant one (the drawback of the 514 - housing is not affordable to middle class worker demographic - hence the renting of apartments which is also crazy expensive) and so I needed to think about downsizing; keeping only that which I know I will return to on a "regular" basis. I even started to purge my DVD collection over the past months.

I think the storage factor is perhaps the most important one one because with the collection I had (before 2021) would have needed about a half room just to house all those tapes, DVDs, CDrs/DVDrs and comic books (yes, XXX comic books).

I always thought that maybe some of this / these would have had some value over time but the era of the physical media is over and done and no one wants to keep bulky VHS tapes anymore. It's a shame because there are some real impossible to find gems in there...

I don't get it

disk crash or lifestyle change ?

if disk crash, people need to look into a NAS capable of redundant RAID

I use an old microserver with 4x1TB CMR drives RAIDed with xigmaNAS Z1

Maybe not tears in rain, some other bodily fluid? Down the drain?

I feel you. I rent a storage unit (10x15 ft) for 85 bucks a month. This houses 5,000+ books, not counting over a thousand discs, and 3000 porn photos, and maybe 100 to 200 doujin/porn comics. This is my only real cost in life, as I prefer being a vagabond. I have family I live with, and eventually I will just buy cheap land and build housing on it, and move stuff there. Life is free and easy, we are the ones who make it difficult. My unit is my quite and peaceful place, where I can go to relax and unwind. Not everybody needs a house for these things.... living on a bike and coming back to my unit is moderately easy.

I have thoughts of purging my collection.

But since I buy mine on R18 and watch it on the big screen I appreciate it more.

I've done it a few times for the sake of relationships that were supposed to be permanent committed relationships. Gosh, guess what happened each and every time. Each of them came up short in a "normal" relationship with all the healthy compromises you're supposed to make. WTF!? Now through recovery apps and more free and paid resources than I used to have I have ultimately replaced my former collections with a much larger one. Why? Because the bottom line is I enjoy it. So my next partner whoever she is better either accept it with 100% tolerance or be a porn freak like me, because I'm not doing that again.

I feel your entire post my friend...

I am lucky as I married a woman who accepts my porn collections (as it stands/as it is "now"). She doesn't understand it but knows it's the last part of the "collector" / hoarder mentality I have (we both have, actually).

She accepts it as long as it isn't "in her face" (pun fully intentional) all the time so I just need to keep it safely tucked away.

Back in 2019, I decided to simply throw away all my porn DVDs. All of them! That stung a bit but once the bag was in the trash I felt a kind of relief. A long time and lots of fun with Kobe and Asia and Kira, etc. Time to send my Vivid girls to the landfill. I also recently reviewed both my External HDs and removed about 10TB of JAV. All stuff I got just because I like the covers but they weren't very good. Now I'm much more picky. Good thing about modern tech is I've been able to find some of my favorite scenes from those US production companies and American actresses without having to have the entire videos taking up space.

I might do another clean up before it gets warm. I've got one 8TB that's absolutely full and one 4TB that's about 95% full. I'm sure we all have some 3GB to 10GB videos that we are only keeping because of one or two scenes. You might have some vids that you would never even watch but the cover art was nice or the actress is pretty but the action is terrible. We should all be clearing out our collection every once in a while.

Are you using a video editor by any chance? I have also considered cutting out favourite scenes from movies to save space.

I downloaded some free software for that purpose but haven't gotten around to learning to use it. Is it hard? Do you recommend a particular editing software? I'm on PC, BTW.
