Public broadcaster NHK announced on June 22 that it will offer free online streaming of all Rio de Janeiro Olympics events that are not scheduled to be covered via NHK and commercial television networks.

Some 2,000 hours of international footage without studio commentary are due to be covered through international live streaming -- more than double the 913 hours during the London Olympics.

Revision of the Broadcast Act in April last year allowed footage that doesn't end up being included in television programs to be viewed through online streaming. NHK's move is a test initiative to determine the viability of internet broadcasting for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

NHK will also launch an experimental initiative for up to four hours per day featuring simultaneous internet broadcasting of events aired on television such as the opening ceremony and the final rounds of sports that would attract viewers.

Thats good news. NHK has a free iOS/Android app "NHK World" that does broadcasts in English. I hope they stream some events through the app too. :D
