These shorts are sick. The writer behind the original stories may have a disturbed and twisted mind for inspiring these disgusting tales of torture and obsession, and love (love which is so alien it doesn't really fit the word).

Of course many stories by Edogawa Rampo have been banned already in Japan for that very same reason.

However, these shorts were great examples of how dark cinema can get. These push right to the boundaries, where sense, reason, and any sort of real point is left behind in its own madness. And it does try to make points. They draw parallels between conscious and subconscious, reality and delusion. The surreal images and narratives destroy the boundaries between the two and the flow freely into each other. The film challenges what art really is. Whether it's a beautiful reflection, a horrific image, or something that is both beautiful on the outside but dead and corroded inside. Here we see that mirrors have the potential to be god, trapping us in its frame. Love is horrific. Horrific. These shorts have the potential to repel you in disgust, or to draw you in and lose yourself in its insanity, and for that reason alone it is a powerful work of art.

Zipangu

"On film, Zipangu exists in a parallel universe. Sitting atop its land is a palace of gold that in turn sits atop a hill. "This is one of the weirdest and most unique films I've ever seen. It's artsploitation, and like most artsploitation, its art is questionable. In the end, though, I judged that it was more art than exploitation. Others, and probably the majority, would probably feel the opposite. A shy young man follows a group of men who are dragging a woman up to his apartment building's roof. He watches quietly as they r*** her. When she awakes in the morning, she asks him to kill her, for she's too unhappy to live. We discover that he himself is suicidal, and that he harbors a deep curiosity and fear around sex, which has lead him to murder before. It does cross the line several times, especially with a series of photos of Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate, among which is a picture of Tate's corpse, but there's a lot of interest to grab onto. If nothing else, the stark black and white cinematography is gorgeous, and director Wakamatsu's use of music is masterful. A trip some will definitely want to take, while others, and you probably know it already, should avoid. The director later went on to produce Oshima's In the Realm of the Senses, which, while certainly a good film, is far less daring and compelling as Go Go Second Time Virgin."

In the dreary and rigid city of Seoul, there lives a guy in the dumps. His name is Gyung-soo and he’s an actor who’s fairly well-known on stage. He trusted a director he knew well and acted in his movie, but it flopped. He persistently insisted on receiving his actor’s fee, but all he got was a mere grand’s worth. He also misses out on his chance to act in the next role he promised to do. The future looks cloudy for him.

Gyung-soo goes down to Choonchun City to meet an old friend who’s a writer. They go out to the town and Gyung-soo’s friend introduces him to a pretty and well-curved dancer named Myung-sook. After having a drink with Gyung-soo and his friend, she suddenly hits on Gyung-soo and on the spur of the moment they hit it off and go to a motel. But no one knew that Gyung-soo’s writer friend liked Myung-soo even though he never revealed his true feelings for her. Gyung-soo’s relationship with his friend turns sour as Myung-sook becomes obsessively infatuated with Gyung-soo.

Gyung-soo tries to put his bad memories of Choonchun behind him and gets on a train headed for Gyungjoo City. Sitting next to him on the train is a woman named Sun-young who entices him after recognizing his face. After she gets off the train, he chases after Sun-young and stops her, but she gives him mixed signals. Gyung-soo follows Sun-young to her house and on the next day he brews up enough courage to knock on her door. This time Gyung-soo becomes infatuated with love.

Desire

A middle class couple is set in their monotonous life until one day the husband has a homosexual affair with a young male prostitute. Suspicious of her husband’s infidelity, the wife seeks the truth and eventually ends up in bed with the young man after learning he was her husband’s lover. The young man feels affection for both, but the couple merely treats him as a means to release their desires and anxieties. The second feature by Kim Eung-su made his debut with Time Lasts, a tale of fallen idealists set against the bleak Russian winter. Desire deals with the dreary lives of the middle class who are caught in their utterly private world of desire. Modest camerawork that presents the erotic sex scenes and the night streets in a cool modern tone are set against the extravagant interiors of the film’s mis-en-scene.
