The main character, Hiromi, does not have the direction in life that her friends already have. Hiromi's friends were going to buy Hiromi a ring, but Hiromi refuses to take all the money because she does not want her friends to be jealous. Hiromi goes on dates by herself to get money for the ring. Soon, she gets in over her head. Hiromi falls too far into the world of enjo-kosai as she tries to hold onto a "friends forever" vision of the past.

Description
Pastoral: To Die in the Country is another great piece of surreal film-making from Shuji Terayama. The film is about a young Terayama who appears in whiteface along with his mother. The young Terayama deals with his sexual hang-ups due to the onset of puberty. He also slowly drifts away from his clinging mother. The village which he lives in is the most delightful sight in the film. Their are strange denizens who populate the village. The one memorable group is the circus troupe which is shown in a spectral, prism filter tone to add life to their profession. Close to the middle of the film, Terayama has an actor playing himself interrupt the film saying that the rest hasn't been edited yet, he soon enters the film he is shooting and interacts with his former self.

This is one of the best surreal film ever made right along Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Fando and Lis", Frank Zappa's "200 Motels", and Wojciech Has's "The Saragossa Manuscript." The film is based on Terayama's original play and series of his haiku about his childhood (IMDb's biography on Terayama is excellent and will give you in-depth view of Terayama's art.) The film has timeless Freudian theme about the adolescent trauma, loss of innocence, and deconstruction of self and memories.

Everything is seen through the eyes of a professional writer for the Tokyo Times living in Bangkok, a naive Japanese bachelor just arrived from the West, a NGO officer, and some very dark characters with their own nightmares to be revealed. As the news reporter tries to pry open a monstrous operation going on in Bangkok that smuggles children from Myanmar and collects some more in Thailand to sell their bodies to sexual tourism, he discovers that this is just but the tip of the iceberg. Organ trading is routine between a prominent physician in a prestigious hospital in Bangkok and a secret mafia that operates in Chiangrai, but here, the story takes a turn with no escape and the plot (as in the original novel by Sogil Yan) gets as dark as it can get.

Brutal, convincing, horrifying, and extremely sad. Shot on real locations that transpire the hardships, smells and anxieties of a theme that is the rotten soul of the darkest secrets and the brightest light of humankind.

She wears a gizmo-ridden chastity belt to keep her from straying but the belt seems to find its way to the ground quite often. As part of her father’s nebulous revenge scheme, Mirai is transferred to a private school, where, frankly, all the students seem about 15 years too old to be in high school. Soon after arriving Mirai makes some friends, and of course a few enemies, and is attacked with a deadly barrage of ball point pens. As the plot unfolds, the reasons behind Mirai's transfer and the true nature of her father's scheme is revealed. And in great Sukeban Deka tradition, Mirai adds a kendama (yo-yo) to her already potent arsenal. Only this yo-yo has an... er, extra feature...

Sexy Battle Girls is best described as a pinku spoof of the Sukeban Deka films & TV shows. Needless to say, the idea of murderous Kegel muscles is a new element of the Sukeban Deka mythology. And since this is a pinku, sex scenes pop up every ten minutes. The limited budget is hilariously evident: the sets and effects (the chastity belt is a bunch of springs and buttons strapped to a plastic crotch cup) are completely cheap. But I suspect no one is going to watch this film looking for Avatar-esque CGI.

If you're looking for 60 minutes of goofy and trashy fun, though, you could do a lot worse. Yes, I suppose you could do a lot better, too, but, well... it does has a deadly vagina. And ninja pens. And a yo-yo with a dildo. I mean, really - if you're the type who wants to see this movie, you know who you are.

Unholy Women is three unconnected thirty minute shorter films packed together to make a longer ninety minute film. My target stars in the first of the three called "Rattle Rattle". She's hanging out with some guy who's married and that's all we need to know in order to proceed to the rest of the film where my heroine runs around screaming, all frightened and sweaty, trying to avoid the clutches of a J-Horror-Goth-Chick—which is another reason I picked this one up. I love the JHGC.

Usually the JHGC is depicted as a ghostly white, youngsterish, somewhat sympathetic, semi-sensuous spirit having a bad hair day. The one in this film is ugly with a capital F, and wears red. I think she is supposed to be more real than her genre sisters but she does have the signature slow, bone rattling shuffle that allows for lots of responsive screaming time. It's hard to say what "Rattle Rattle" is about because I don't remember it having much of a story beyond the running around and the infidelity setup, but I think it's pretty good because of several JHGC moments. I don't remember how it ends.

The second film is called "Steel" and it's pretty funny because it tries to be creepy but doesn't know which way to go. It stars a girl who is a burlap sac from the waist up and likes to sew. Her father pumps (literally, with a pump) gallons of what appears to be liposuction remains through a tube into her sac part and lures young men into dating her by offering them a job and showing them a picture of some hot babe. One guy, with the requisite diversity training I guess, dates her and sees beyond, through, around—I don't know—the burlap sac part and tries to have sex with her. He crawls between her legs in an enlightened post-feminism foreplay maneuver to get under her sac and never comes out. Surprise, surprise.

The third film is called "Sleep My Child", and it's about a cute young boy whose world is mysterious and confusing, has some dead people floating around behind him, a freaky grandmother, and an abusive mother with an overly kind public comportment, all of which is exacerbated by the fact that his mom always seems to be waving goodbye to him when she really means 'come here'. That confused me too.

All in all Unholy Women has some reasonably creepy atmosphere without a lot of plot to get in the way. Look for it in the cheap bin or on late night cable.

Hypnotised is a stunning masterpiece in the psychological thriller genre. While it has been marketed as a supernatural horror there are only small elements of the traditional horror style in the film. The real horror of this film is based largely in the characters and their psychology. The film follows the story of an emotionally damaged psychiatrist who develops an unhealthy (and unprofessional) relationship with a seriously unstable female patient. As the two get more involved both patient and doctor quickly unravel in mutual self-destructive downward spirals. What sets this film apart though is the stunning direction by Kim In-shik. The film is visually stunning, with gorgeous and unique set designs, interesting locations, fantastic use of CG, and great cinematography. The performances are outstanding, particularly Kim Hye-su, whose portrayal of the disturbed, fragile, emotionally crippled Ji-su is captivating

Acacia is one of those rare tree-based horror movies, where a tree takes control of something and terrible events happen... What was special about "Acacia" was that it was not only very creepy and eerie, but it also contained some very beautiful and haunting imagery. This movie is really, very close to being perfect.

A man wakes up to find himself locked in a tiny, cramped concrete room, in which he can barely move. He doesn't remember why he is there and where he came from. He has a terrible stomach injury and is slowly bleeding to death. He begins to explore the narrow confines of his prison and crawls around the maze-like room, only to see a horrible vision of hell waiting for him at each end of the room. Finally he gives up on the struggle and collapses in exhaustion. Then he begins to remember images from his past. Clinging to these images he creeps forward with the last ounces of his strength and meets a woman in a place that stinks of rotting corpses. The man and the woman both try to recall where they came from, but their memories are so uncertain that they are not even sure they want to return. The man is ready to give up but the woman insists on going forward. Neither of them can imagine the incredible end to the journey.

This movie, although only 40 minutes long, sends Saw and Cube back to kindergarten, making it look stupid, shallow and pointless. Once again Shinya Tsukamoto proves that he is one of the most challenging, thought-provoking and original directors of today, absolutely not afraid of pushing boundaries in terms of what might be shown on celluloid. And he knows pretty well what scares us, oh yes. It's like your worst, fever-induced nightmares come surprisingly alive, and I'm not talking about waking up in a completely darkened, concrete maze. It might be a parallel for war, genocide or just totally painful, desperate loneliness... or just a statement that, after all, we are nothing more than a piece of meat which happened to have a tiny spark of life inside... This movie raises so many questions... and even if most of them remain unanswered, it is worth to feel really uncomfortable for this 40 minutes. Some people will probably start having nightmares like this, but for me it was more like a relief that Tsukamoto and his protagonist lived it for me...

As she get closer to the solution, she gets more and more convinced that Aku's deprogramming of former sectmembers is important.

Innovative, tense and unnerving tale that is also very stylish, with inspired visuals, imaginative use of sound and spectacular editing. It is also a little confusing upon first viewing but it is clear by the end that everything did make sense. An intelligent work that deals with gender/work issues, psychological make up and it's consequences plus the question of dealing with cult 'victims'

Three thieves approaching their twilight years team up with a reckless punk who screws them out of their winnings. Casualties result, but there are still enough men standing to exact bloody revenge.

No stranger to blood, guts, gunfire and gore, Fukasaku demonstrated that he still had the golden touch with this anarchic actioner made prior to BATTLE ROYALE. Fukasaku directs in overdrive and brandishes his camera like a battering ram by salting every scene with boundless energy, wild angles, moody lighting and riveting performances, especially that of Kenichi Hagawara as Kanzaki. The "Streetfighter" himself, Sonny Chiba, also appears as one of the ageing trio, a youthful mobster who has shacked up with a crazy bimbo (Keiko Oginome) young enough to be his granddaughter and insane enough to be a problem.

By film's end, we get a wild Japanese variation on "The Great Race" as cops, loan sharks, assassins and shafted gangsters take part in a boisterous car chase cum shoot-out that shakes up the concrete jungles of Hokkaido. The pacing is fast, the staging of the violent action is adroit and the music keeps everything pumping. Fukasaku's pseudo-documentary style brings a terrific rawness to the drama and the non-stop spectacle never becomes too heavy-handed or takes itself too seriously

Without the work of Sogo Ishii there would be no Takashi Miike or Shinya Tsukamoto. That becomes quite clear in the opening minutes of BURST CITY. The hyper-kinetic beginning of the film with its lightning fast editing and violent images together with the use of music were obvious influences on Miike's DEAD OR ALIVE and BLUES HARP as well as a number of other films. And the camera-work, use of black and white photography and cyberpunk imagery were later recycled in Tsukamoto's TETSUO films as well as SNAKE OF JUNE.

BURST CITY is essentially a feature length punk rock music clip. The film is set in a kind of post-apocalyptic Japan where everyone is a punk, a freak or a brutal cop. There are non-stop riots in the streets, non-stop punk concerts, non-stop gang warfare, non-stop police brutality and non-stop car chases. This film is one hell of a wild ride and it left me feeling spun. The soundtrack is made up entirely of awesome Japanese punk rock and fits the images perfectly.

BURST CITY is powerful, frenetic, feral, rabid cinema that feels like a transmission from the gutter of the future

Description

They're approached by a blackmailer (Tsunehiko Watase) who promises to help them exact vengeance in exchange for setting up a corrupt local politician, and aided by a independent Yakuza biker chick (Reiko Ike).

This "pinky violence" film has all the hallmarks of the genre--lesbianism, gratuitous shower scenes, girl-on-girl torture and violence. The sex and nudity is always appreciated, but the torture scenes are pretty unpleasant (albeit imaginative). Fortunately, the violence is not as graphic as it could be. The treatment of the male characters is pretty cynical--they're almost all lecherous perverts with "uniform" fetishes except for the vice principal, who's just plain evil. and a mercenary tabloid journalist who is the only male protagonist. Miki Sugimoto would go to appear in "Zero Woman--Red Handcuffs" and Reiko Ikke would go on to appear in "Sex and Fury", both of which would have a big influence years later on Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill". Both are pretty appealing (if not particularly believable as teenage delinquents).

This is a actually pretty big-budget and well-made film (according to genre expert Jaspar Sharp the "pinky violence" series differs from other Japanese "pink" sex films in that they were made by a big studio and had much bigger production values). These kind of films obviously aren't everybody's cup of sake, but if you like them in general, you'll probably enjoy this one.

There are so many film festivals in Korea that it's difficult to stand out. But the Jeonju International Film Festival has weathered the competition in the past decade, thanks to its unwavering focus on promising filmmakers and their digital projects.

In the film "Koma", Kawase explores the relationship between fragile and often tense history between Korea and Japan through the relationship that develops between a third generation Korean-Japanese man, who unexpectedly visits the small and quiet village of Koma, and a Japanese woman, a somewhat mysterious inhabitant of the village.
Korean director Hong's "Lost in the Mountains" tells the story of a woman's love-hate relationship with the people closest to her, including a friend, a teacher with whom she had an affair and her ex-boyfriend. It starts when she makes an impromptu visit to see her friend, who lives in Jeonju.
"Butterflies Have No Memories", the film by the director Diaz, depicts the lives of the inhabitants of a remote island far from the Philippines who suffer economic difficulties after a gold mining company withdraws from the town. One day, a sudden visit by a Canadian woman born and raised on the island makes their already troubled lives even more complicated.

Kids will be attracted to the movie for its bright colors, amazing CGI and playful music. Adults on the other hand will find that they can identify with at least one of the characters in their own personal way. If you're a fan of "Memories of Matsuko" or "Kamikaze Girls", then you will most likely enjoy Paco and the Magical Picture Book. This director has a very distinct style of storytelling and his movies are always very entertaining, yet more reflective than most mainstream films. Tetsuya Nakashima, the director, somehow always manages to create characters that you sympathize with and care about which is a rare thing to do. Overall, this film was very magical and extremely touching

A splashy, fun addition to Takashi Miike's eclectic film canon, this deliberately overblown live-action film version of a popular late-'70s anime TV show spoofs the very notion of mounting big-budget widescreen adaptations of animated kids' fare. Between adults' nostalgia for the trashy delights of the original skein and the lust of crazed juve fans for pretty-boy pop star Sho Sakurai (to judge from the screaming Asian tweens attending "Yatterman's" Gotham premiere), the pic should rock locally following its March 7 release. But constant in-jokes and ginned-up sexual suggestiveness make Stateside distribution improbable. Yatterman, as it turns out, to the linguistic bemusement of English-speaking viewers, is two people: Yatterman 1, aka Gan, a boy in blue (Sakurai) and Yatterman 2, aka Ai, a girl in pink (Saki Fukuda). Together with a canine robot dubbed (what else?) Yatterwoof, they protect the world from the evil Doronbow Gang, composed of sexy Lady Doronjo (Kyoko Fukada) and her two henchmen, rat-faced mechanical genius Boyacky (Katsuhisa Namase) and pig-faced strongman Tonzra (Kendo Kobayashi).

From an opening that finds Tokyo in spectacular shambles by the time the collective Yatterman arrives, Miike delights in subverting the series' conventions with such loving exactitude that even those unfamiliar with the TV show can readily figure out what's being joshed. Miike sometimes inserts tongue-in-cheek "explanations" via 2-D animation, such as an instructional cross-section cutaway of Yatterwoof's inner workings.

In contrast to the pumped-up f/x strategy deployed in, say, "Transformers," the big-eyed bots in "Yatterman" retain their status as toys, albeit tremendously oversized ones. The more hyperbolic this CGI extravaganza becomes, the more it keeps its kid-friendly brand of cheesiness, along with a loopy imaginativeness that is pure Miike.

The money-making scams that finance the villains' increasingly wild robotics are thematically coordinated, so the peddling of discount wedding dresses (modeled by Doronjo) breeds the giant "Bridesmaidiot," with gun turrets for nipples. The sale of giant sushi yields a tentacle-swinging "Spencer the Squid," with attendant guppy warriors.

Miike has considerably amped up the sexual content, a la "Austin Powers," whether through grotesque inanity (warring megarobots of opposite genders, overcome by passion, get it on in a clinch of crunching metal) or in the pubescent libido of its straight-arrow hero (flinging aside his faithful No. 2, Yatterman 1 buries his head between the thighs of a damsel in distress, ostensibly to suck the poison out of a scorpion bite). Indeed, erstwhile repressed desire throbs everywhere.

But despite the stunningly idiotic gags, the dingbat musical numbers and dazzling color schemes, the pic's repetitive episodic structure ultimately trumps Miike's parody of it, and becomes wearisome after a while. Relentlessly cacophonous soundtrack matches the nonstop visual onslaught.

Based on a novel written by Tamura Taijiro, and is actually a remake of 1950 Toho film Escape at Dawn directed by Taniguchi Senkichi with stars Ikebe Ryo and Shirley Yamaguchi, director Suzuki Seijun transformed a Nikkatsu ready-made routine script with low budget and tight schedule into one of his finest arts. Without digressing from the script or the novel, he recreated his signature world that is abstractive and ideological. Even though this is a B-movie, or maybe because it is, Suzuki with the production designer Kimura Takeo displays fantastic backdrops using some painstaking techniques of visual effects, superb studio sets and location filming behind outstanding performances acted by Kawaji Tamio, Nogawa Yumiko and Tamagawa Isawo. Compare to the Escape that has altered some elements from the Tamura's original this Suzuki version is essentially true to it, therefore Suzuki version has quite important elements such as the prostitution in the Army, multiple stratum of knotty personae and complicated layers of grotesque psychological characterizations concomitant to their bizarre relationships all of that are omitted in the Taniguchi's "fine literary effort." Along with his sense of unique humor these deep feelings the film radiates might be inspired from his own war experiences as a soldier during the WW II and it could be said that, in this regard, some similarity might be in Samuel Fuller's, many of these films are also deeply affected by Fuller's own war experiences.

This is a gem of touching cinema. Despite the English translation of the title- Accidental Kidnapper' this is far from being a slapstick movie. Which is not to say that there is not plenty of comedy but it is the clever balance between drama and humor that sustains the story and allows for the character interaction to truly shine.

It is precisely the relationship between the main characters forms the core around which the movie builds itself as a charming tale of human bonds. This can only be achieved through topnotch acting and in this area the child actor needs be praised for his effortless interpretation of a lively little boy that does not veer into cliché.

IMDB Comment: This film is about three young ladies and four guys who are known to each other in a high school in their senior year in Japan. The guys, save for the portly Ando, are obsessed with having sex and are pretty much jerks about it. The very pretty Akie goes for Ando, liking his "man boobs", as she is particularly well endowed. Another of the female students is having an affair with her teacher, while the third is completely unschooled in being who she is (she was menstruating and had no idea what it was about and why). You follow them through this time. Its not really a comedy, though there are a few amusing scenes. Its played more as drama, and it succeeds in that vein. You get some thought provoking moments, some revealing senses of self and some closure to the story. The actors and actresses are unknown to me, but they were pretty good. The direction is also good. Not a revelation, but mostly a serious film about growing up. I didn't love it, but I liked it.

Norikos dinner table

One of the girls, known only by the title "Ueno54", persuades Noriko to runaway to Tokyo so they can meet in person. Noriko willingly accepts and escapes to Tokyo, wherein she meets the real person behind the mysterious Ueno54 and learns her true name—Kumiko (Tsugumi). What Noriko soon discovers is that Kumiko operates a "family-circle" program, which specializes in taking in young girls and giving them new personalities and families…



With the release of "Suicide Club", a film that explored the disastrous effects that an enigmatic cult had on an entire population of youth, director Sion Sono not only created a memorable horror film, but also provided some social commentary on Japanese youth. And while it was effective in what it was trying to convey, many viewers considered it a gory, albeit somewhat intelligent film. Sono decided to take a different route with "Noriko's Dinner Table", this time around taking out the unnecessary gore and replacing it with a more introspective stance. The film is split up into various chapters, each dedicating ample time to the film's characters. While this might seem distracting for a film such as this, it does the exact opposite—the first-person narrative of the characters allow the viewer to understand some of the decisions they choose, why they choose them, and what they hope to arrive at after the decision has been made. It's through these narrative perspectives that provided the truly captivating moments throughout the film, wanting to see the outcome of characters I have gotten to know.

The visual effects were applied brilliantly: white dove and the passing from reflection of light to white butterflies... Gong-ju's favorite color. This is a film which can make you believe the purity of an man who committed 3 crimes and who tempted to r*** a disabled young woman. Of course many stories by Edogawa Rampo have been banned already in Japan for that very same reason.

However, these shorts were great examples of how dark cinema can get. These push right to the boundaries, where sense, reason, and any sort of real point is left behind in its own madness. And it does try to make points. They draw parallels between conscious and subconscious, reality and delusion. The surreal images and narratives destroy the boundaries between the two and the flow freely into each other. The film challenges what art really is. Whether it's a beautiful reflection, a horrific image, or something that is both beautiful on the outside but dead and corroded inside. Here we see that mirrors have the potential to be god, trapping us in its frame. Love is horrific. Horrific. These shorts have the potential to repel you in disgust, or to draw you in and lose yourself in its insanity, and for that reason alone it is a powerful work of art.

"This is one of the weirdest and most unique films I've ever seen. It's artsploitation, and like most artsploitation, its art is questionable. In the end, though, I judged that it was more art than exploitation. Others, and probably the majority, would probably feel the opposite. A shy young man follows a group of men who are dragging a woman up to his apartment building's roof. He watches quietly as they r*** her. When she awakes in the morning, she asks him to kill her, for she's too unhappy to live. We discover that he himself is suicidal, and that he harbors a deep curiosity and fear around sex, which has lead him to murder before. It does cross the line several times, especially with a series of photos of Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate, among which is a picture of Tate's corpse, but there's a lot of interest to grab onto. If nothing else, the stark black and white cinematography is gorgeous, and director Wakamatsu's use of music is masterful. A trip some will definitely want to take, while others, and you probably know it already, should avoid. The director later went on to produce Oshima's In the Realm of the Senses, which, while certainly a good film, is far less daring and compelling as Go Go Second Time Virgin."

Gyung-soo tries to put his bad memories of Choonchun behind him and gets on a train headed for Gyungjoo City. Sitting next to him on the train is a woman named Sun-young who entices him after recognizing his face. After she gets off the train, he chases after Sun-young and stops her, but she gives him mixed signals.
