In Spain the Culture Ministress is also proposing the same, counting with all the Government support, including our President, Zapatero (Shoemaker), they want to protect the music and cinema industry by closing suspectful websites by surprise, without the judges´s authority and orders...

All the spanish internet community we have here rose last week and we have won the battle by now, but this "law" will ve voted by our Senate in February and we´ll see how it ends...

I won't claim to be the best tech in the world, the computer knowledge I have is somewhat incomplete and learned on the fly. One thing I have learned though, is how to surf to "blocked websites". I do it everyday I surf. You might be surprised at some of the sites that I have seen blocked. The usual sites seem to be tech boards, public proxy sites, torrent sites and porn sites. I have even had access denied to me for Akiba-Online on more than one occasion. But the internet was not designed to inhibit access to websites, that goes against the very soul of its' existence. There are ways around these types of "filters" which prohibit access to certain websites.

A clear indicator you are being denied access to a website is a 403 forbidden error. Mostly this is from the ISP you are surfing from,(although some are honest enough to actually tell you they denying you access), and occasionally this is from the website itself,(they are running an IP filter or you are trying to access a part of the site without administrator rights or something along those lines).

Sometimes a 404 "not found" message will come up for a blocked website. Then it is harder to discern whether the website is actually down or being blocked.

Tor is useful for staying anonymous and accessing blocked websites but it can be frustrating because the exitnodes are hard to control ,(if not impossible at times), as well as your request may be blocked by the exitnodes ISP. However Tor uses a variety or exitnodes and sooner or later you will usually gain access to the site you were trying to access.

While most countries, including China, that I have come across use different "filters" depending on the ISP you are accessing it can be hard to determine
who is blocking what without the trial and error approach. Proxies are very handy in this case and generally a proxy from the same country as the site you are trying to access well do the trick of bypassing any block your own ISP has set in place. For looking up domain names and such one handy site is:

http://www.all-nettools.com/toolbox/network-tools.htm

Public proxies are not illegal to use, although I don't claim to know the law in every country. For very restrictive and suppressive countries such as China I would suggest Tor as opposed to most proxies or proxy services. Tor encrypts your traffic which is something a regular proxy won't do, this greatly inhibits snooping of your traffic by your own ISP.

In general I am sad to hear about the "porn crackdown" in China. I despise censorship in principal and believe everyone should be their own judge as to what they should and should not see. People should not be treated as inorganic robots controlled by their own governments to do and think only how they are told. While I respect the law and the need for it, as well as rules and regulations in order to protect and serve societies in general, an individuals rights to free will should always be respected and honored. This is my opinion anyway.

Crap.. They're going through with it? I'm gonna move there next year. WTF?!

It has yet to be presented in the parliament and then if passed it will go to the Senate for further debate and possible modification, but the intent is there. The opposition parties may reject it or pass it with changes. The current opposition leader would probably approve of the idea.

Thanks for your help 'Ceewan' and 'scarletsnow' and thanks for the invite 'Aqua223'.

I already have a VPN and I do use proxies sometimes. OTOH, I'm not that into Tor. It was just a hassle to close it and it's accompanying programs. I tried it again a month ago and back then the over-all speed was the issue. I'll probably stick with my VPN for now.

Porkar, does the opposition have the majority?

ehe...I'm from China, and I've not had access denied to me for Akiba-Online ...so far.
Actually the so called "porn crackdown" happens from time to time here. We just wait for some months and the porn-sites will be back again. Not a big deal.

Hi, I'm from the Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of China and I do not approve of your post. Please wait outside for the party van to arrive.

It can be so easy for attempts at humor to go wrong when there are often not only language barriers but vast cultural ones as well. Sometimes I can't tell the sarcastic remarks from the offensive ones myself. Not that we don't seem to get assholes from every country now and then but for the most part I think there is a good group of nics that frequent this forum. When you consider the amount of porn shared here I actually find that surprising. Porn lovers are generally viewed as a nasty and depraved bunch, but I think at moments that is just something we all share in common. It is hard for many of us here, especially myself, to imagine any country that would persecute people for basic porn from a legal standpoint, let alone imagine what it would be like to live in that same country. Not that the country I live in is the most ideal imaginable but that is one worry I am gratefully spared.

...U don't have to. I was just kidding about the crap thing. Sorry for the misunderstanding I caused.
I agree with what Ceewan said ,"It can be so easy for attempts at humor to go wrong when there are often not only language barriers but vast cultural ones as well"

Are you F@*king kidding me. The China government obviously have nothing better to do. There are better way to spend tax payer money.

I had stayed in China for more than 2 months. Hookers are everywhere. I can't even find a decent pub, karaoke or spa without any "special service", you know what I mean. Once I went for sauna in a quite decent hotel in China and saw 2 girls blowing the 2 guys next to me. It's also happened in the jacuzzi and massage room. People are having sex everywhere without shame. Well, I'm all for sex but, not where I'm relaxing.
In other words, prostitution is everywhere in China especially in the major city. And I don't see the China government doing anything about it.

My friends introduce me to one of his female co workers in Shanghai, who admitted she does work as a part-time hookers beside her usual office work to earn more money, life in China is tough. According to her, prostitution is nothing to be ashamed in China, poverty is. Well, she's right and I confirmed with my other China friends.

Blocking porn site is no way to purify the society. The social and moral issues China facing came directly from the China government administration policies.
While I were in China for 2 months this year, there's hardly any decent and honest China citizen except in those small towns in other province. Everyone try to con and outsmart each others. Western foreigner is their favorite prey. Luckily, I'm also a chinese (not from China) and manage to blend in.

I suggest you visit China to see the truth yourself. My recommendation, cities such as Shanghai, Beijing or Dongguan.

I believe China government action to block porn site, facebook & youtube access is just an excuse to show some hostilities to the western administration.

but the "sexual" need and craziness in china is everywhere. u can feel if u go in chinese place (bars and club) and not place for mixed customers..
and is a bad way of sex because is frustrating way..is not a need for happiness, is like excape from something...
