Legality of downloading JAV

So if you are in the united states, what is the law in regards of downloading JAV videos, censored, uncensored?

Is it breaking the law?

Can a japanese porn maker sue you a us citizen for obtaining the jav illegally?

Has it happened before?

A specific example or situation, What about sending your computer to best buy to recover lost JAV? Im worried that a best buy employee will see all those JAV movies on my hard drive.

If you don't want others to see what is on your PC, Google like crazy to fix things yourself. OR...just buy (if you don't have one/some) a few external HDDs and move everything off. You should probably anyway to avoid loss in case your hard drive crashes beyond recovery.

It is breaking the law, but since most JAV studios aren't interested in foreign markets and they often don't offer the DVDs abroad you're unlikely to get sued. After all, if you couldn't buy the product anyway they're not losing any money from your download.
