Massive fail on the Korea's and China's part with making porn illegal... it's a huge industry and by doing so gave Japan "exclusive rights" to Asian porn along with all that $$$$$.

Piracy may affect sales, but it give av stars more opportunity to be invited to stage events and film ads for gaming products and small non-porn productions all over Asia even if they retire already. Ex: sora aoi, maria ozawa, yui hatano, rola takizawa, and anri okita. There's the dark part of the av industry where some are force to work in the av industry or to film certain extreme scenes. Also, the new and popular replace the old by decreasing their promotions and events. I think more popular idols will transition to av like yua mikami and shoko because good pay and publicity to get more sponsors and sugar bosses. I'm not sure if these are factors to why a lot of av idols decided to retire or they decided it after seeing their friends leaving.

What the heck are you talking about? Piracy is not the reason girls get more opportunities, it makes girls and companies have to do more just to get noticed, It limits girls more then it helps.

The second thing i highlighted also makes little sense, if the old remain popular new girls won't replace them in promos or events, Acky has been around for a long time and nobody has replaced her or is going to.

Yua Mikami wasn't a popular idol, she was like a C-Level idol before doing jav, She only got initially popular because of her AKB/SKE affiliation, any girl from that group would sell well in JAV she just also happened to have the it factor, while Shoko was a gravure idol, many of them end up in JAV not really a shock.

I don't think piracy is a factor to the actresses, they get paid regardless if things are pirated or not, it just means they have to do more and if they are good enough to get to the top then they'll get more events and promos to do

Av is not limited to Japan. A lot of people outside of Japan especially fans from China and Taiwan watches them online instead of buying the DVDs. Piracy in a way helps widen their target demographic range. This enable some top av girls to get more opportunities to make show appearances in those countries. There are news report that av salary are getting cut and some lost their popularity. Akiho is a special case, she been in the industry for 14 years already. Yua mikami and shoko takahashi ruin their idol image, so end up transiting to av. It's a very effective marketing ploy to label them as former idol. It doesn't matter if they are B-list idols, they get tons of promotions and are bestsellers of the year. A lot of av actresses are former gravure idols, but they never receive the same treatment, so I wouldn't say they are C-level either. Selling DVD doesn't make enough these days. They are hosting more meet and greet events for their actresses.

And at those meet and greet events, the actresses have bonuses for people bringing DVDs to sign or buying DVDs on location sometimes more than one copy, just like Jpop where people buy many copies of the same CD for chances at lottery where they can meet them.. Except JAV idols are a lot more accessible, mostly the girls I follow on Twitter seem like real down to earth girls who just have fun and treat shooting movies like a regular job and like to meet their fans and are really grateful to them.. but I agree yeah, the social aspect is more important than ever in JAV as it is in pretty much every entertainment industry, the meet and greets are a great tool for them..

I'm sure their management company gets to split a big chuck of it as well. The Jav culture is very different from what you see in American avn or exotica conventions. It's part of their av personas to be the happy go lucky cheerful girl. Yeah, you will receive perks of different tiers depending on the amount of DVDs you purchase at the event. You may even receive a chance for them to feed you too. According to some of the popular av idols twitter, they are costantly invited to many stage shows and nightclubs to perform. Some even get a chance to guest star in mainstream movies and film advertisement for mobile games.

Ahaha trust me I know a lot more about JAV than about American porn which I am basically clueless about besides that it does nothing for me so I ignore it. Yes, some of the girls I follow are in kind of mock idol groups where a bunch of the girls get together and put on a little show, it's very cute.. and then yes there's the perks, there's photo opportunities with the girls that depend on the amount of DVDs you buy, the more you buy the more photos you get and there are some additional perks I have seen like handmade items from the girls like pins with their pictures of even baked goods ahaha..
tokyonightstle shares some photos from a few av events and talks about them too at its blog. https://tokyonightstyle.com/blog/avevent/takahashi-shoko-nov-av-event/

Ah that's cool.. here's the girl group I was talking about, it's from Azuki's twitter..

View attachment 866948

Here's a short video with them: https://twitter.com/bacon_tanaka/status/801769523376365568

And she makes things like these pins and her drawings to give to people:

View attachment 866949 View attachment 866950

That's her pupper ahaha.. but yeah, it seems like she's doing well because she really knows how to play the social game..
Well, Av idols are very careful about their image just like celebrities. Japanese are reknown to be very formal and well mannered people. They rather apologize and accept your criticism then joke about it rather than make a rant about things. Unlike American pornstars that talks about weed and private sex a lot, av idols always tries to conceal themselves in private and will not admit if they're seeing someone in private. They don't want to be caught like dating like Alice miyuki before her retirement last year. Also, any drug problem like risa coda and nozomi aso will hurt their career a lot.

It funny that it's sometimes very hard to differentiate between regular idols and av idols if they both wear similar cute outfit and sing on stage as a group. They tends to overlap thesedays.

That's one of the factor. Some get cuts because they weren't popular to begin with and was never able to attract more fans. A lot did retire in the past year and a half like rio, aino kishi, ai uehara, alice miyuki, anri okita, and a few more. The competition is high with idols transitioning to av + companies like s1 spend more of their resource on them instead. Ideapocket is losing the edge with girls retiring or switching to a different label.

Which even though I'm a member at this site, I try to buy titles from actresses I like from R18/DMM.. but sometime they make it very difficult, if for instance the movie isn't available at those sites they're very hard to buy.. and even DMM is very picky about foreign credit cards..

you mean buy physicaly (dvd or bluray) or pay for download ?

one and big factor ;)

Ideapocket have similiar problem with Alice, can't offer their stars better contract than competitor, I guess becaused their sales are not very good, and its not only the girls fault, but because the studios can't make attractive products + massive piracy

I'd love to be able to buy DVD's but since I live in the US and there are restriction on those sites about shipping, I buy digital.. If there's sites you know where I can get phsyical copies I'd like to know, but the only sites I know of charge huge markups and I'm not about to pay $60 for a DVD...
It depends on wear you live in the states. I'm sure there might be some places that sell av if you live in the city.

They retired because of either A being in the industry so long and wanting to stop, or B like in the case of Ai Uehara they did everything and had nothing left to prove or do, plus there isn't a high rate of Popular idols transitioning to AV, Shoko is probably the most famous case in the past few years besides her it's usually C level idols that transition to av, and only a few ever make a mark, S1S1 does not spend more resources on idols that transitioned to AV, they spend it on whoever makes them the most money.

Idea Pocket doesn't really have the same problem as Alice, they are owned by Hokuto so no matter who they lose they'll be fine, Alice though isn't owned by them and they'll need stars to survive or become irrelevant like Max-A has over the last two years

I should agree with you

Alice will be struggling like Max-A, its not easy to get high quality girls, if the are not very lucky they will spend at least 2-3 years before they can get real stars

no there are very few Americans actresses in the adult film industry that are half as hot as some of the worst JAV girls. I think it is the lack of plastic surgery on the JAV side that accounts for this the most, or fewer girls that have been butchered by a hack surgeon. Most of the American stars look like they are made of badly tanned, leather after a while stop looking human altogether.

I used to believe that too. Maybe your looking at the Mainstream Vivid type stuff with all the typical Blonde etc types.
I see many good amateur stuff that in some ways looks better than Jav or mainstram U.S junk. There are some movies from Evil Angel and such with fantastic scenes. Many Jav actresses have boob jobs these days. I like Jav, but being fair, JAV also has its share of butchered women. Yes, there are many with natural looking girls too, and there are many natural girls in from other countries. Too many to count.

evil angel used many talents outside US, mostly from eastern europe

I agree some of those east european girls are better than JAV girls, they are natural pretty, they are much better than most american mainstream porn stars

and people here are comparing mainstream JAV vs maintsream US porn, amateur are different matter, its not easy to find real japanese amateur videos, example sex cam, ecc

Amia miley and katie Morgan got one of the worst boobjob. Their skin are to the point of exploding, but Katsuni did a good job on it. Both industries are very different. In America, older actresses are still at the top like julia Ann. Milf in Japan is a niche category. Conventions and award presentation are different.

In America, everything they consider are best in the world too, but pornstars usually make money from strip clubs pole dances in big cities and escort. Japanese AV idols get a lot of opportunities to go to other cities of Asia. Both parties are look down, but top AV idols get better service on set. Yeah, the 90's standards are those busty, tall, blonde slightly muscular women(look like transsexuals), but in the last decade there are petite Caucasian and Latinas too.

I think JAV does have more beautiful and real women overall, but most of the difference that Jonofthedead sees is probably in the presentation. JAV does have a particular style, they pretend to be documentaries, everything is "real", so they try to present the women in a more naturalistic way. Obvious breast implants kind of goes against all that. And I feel the "realness" of JAV makes amateur porn kind of redundant as well. I feel no desire to watch amateurs after watching JAV.

Maybe there are different standards of beauty in Japan compared to the USA too. An actress in the US porn indutry can increase sales by getting breast implants. Could a JAV actress increase sales of her movies the same way? Does she even need to? Probably not. Cuteness is still celebrated in Japan. Flat-chested girls are still important in JAV.

America got their fair share of petite girls too like recently piper perri that do rough interacial. They got their variety of Asian, Caucasian, Black, and Latinas, but the guys are always macho(unlike av) and there's no plot besides a one minute introduction and a last second one liner quote. A lot of American pornstars are open about sharing photos of their boyfriends, weed, and kids. Av idols are more cautious about their private lives. SOME Japanese av actresess and western pornstars do escorts and strip shows at clubs and have their award show, but the overall tone and culture is very different.
