I'm not talking about screenshot(printscreen) but screencaps(preview of the whole movie).

I've followed these two links for making screencaps in VLC players but i think they are outdated.
http://carpesomediem.hubpages.com/hub/making-screencaps-with-vlc
http://jadeite-icons.livejournal.com/2030.html

Cos on my VLC player(v1.17), i don't get "image video output" option in Video/Output modules.

Anyone know how to take screencap on current VLC player or Media Player? or is it just easier to download some 3rd party software to do this? Thanks.

I suggest you to use media player classic home cinema (MPC-HC for short) that comes with CCCP codec pack. Simply go to File menu, click on "Save thumbnails" and voila, you have a picture with different scenes from your movies, and infos on top of them.

isnt MPC just the front end for klite/CCCP?
MPC-HC can be used as a standalone player as it manages its own filters or disable them if you want to use your own.
