Could have post this in the Gossips thread, but I think this warrants attention.

There is a rumour going around that the powers-that-be is trying to kill off the high school genre as part of the ongoing effort to rein in the industry.

The rumour first emerge here in the form of a twit :-
%25E3%2582%25B9%25E3%2582%25AF%25E3%2583%25AA%25E3%2583%25BC%25E3%2583%25B3%25E3%2582%25B7%25E3%2583%25A7%25E3%2583%2583%25E3%2583%2588%2B2017-12-14%2B11.03.13.png

Uniform is alright, but school backdrop and anything that links the actress to imply she is a highschooler will be a no go. Bloomers are goners by the way.

And we have concrete evidence of the measurd in Amatsuka's latest release :-

Notice how certain things and dialoughs are censored out as stated by the twit.

However, I like to state that the highschool genre had also been observed to be dying out for a while now. Ideapockets used to release them by the dozens, but now the rate had slowed to a trickle.

And I have observe that trend now is to cast actress in mature roles as oppose to youngish ones. Tsubomi doesn't have a highschool role for this year, I believe.

Somehow I don't think Tsubomi would be very convincing in the high school student role nowadays.

I think the decline of the high school student theme is more due to demographic changes in Japan. It's an aging population, low birth rate, no immigration.

In that case why are youth centric groups like AKB48 around ?

No, I believe the distanting of Highschool setting is a clean up effort to breakaway from the perception of tolerance towards underage sex in Japan. Incidentally, the highschool genre cutback seems to start after Japan formally outlawed child porn.

Wish I had an answer to this one. Could be a tightening of restrictions 'due to the Olympics' that you may see loosened again later.

One thing I can say is from our user stats at least milf titles are usually more popular than schoolgirl ones.

Interesting. But what is the ratio of the titles when compare between the 2 genre in your catalog ? If the ratio are the same, then it's the shifting of trend. Otherwise, it's a diliberate cutback.

When you ask ratio, are you asking ratio of how often we show each or access popularity?

I can tell you that every single milf title we've shown--be it an older release from a decade ago or something more recent--has been really popular*. Schoolgirl titles whether they star famous JAV stars (of any era) or true amateurs have their fans, but from our numbers, they don't perform as well as milf ones. This is just for our site though so other sites that cater to foreign fans along with domestic statistics may vary. It's said that youth and innocence combined with sex is popular, but from what I see, people prefer older married women regardless of their looks. They prefer them this way and like the fact that such a 'lady' would cheat on her husband and do it in such an audacious way (<insert any JAV situation here from simple one-on-one sex to gangbangs and beyond>).

*popular = total combined download and streams from our subscribers for the first 30 days the update is online.

Nevermind, I'll do my own deduction at my leisure to see if there are indeed diliberate cutbacks of releases for the schoolgirls genre.

But my opinion remains that the trend is definatly there, at least for the high profile stars where they are being cast in a more mature sassy role instead of youthful and cute.

As for your subscribers, I take it as majority of them are westerners ? From my observation, they seem to have a aversion towards anything youthful in their adult entertainment these days lest they be labels as paedophile. Especially in light of the recent Weinstein scandal.

I guess that's why some younger idols are playing teachers more to keep some school theme role playing fetish despite they don't have the body type or looks for one. Idk about sales, but I always thought school girl or any young girl genre in General is more popular in Japan or Asia while milf titles seems like a step higher than most niche. I guess that's why some idols like yui hatano plays step mother or housewives roles a lot more ever since she debuted. I guess we might wont see any barely legal alike theme that imply the girl is a teen anymore and wouldn't be surprised if merchant and studios remove those titles soon too. I feel loli fans won't see any more lolis in the future too then if that's the case. Like global warming, there are opposite sides arguinging if it's real or not. For av, is the government really trying to shut down av and only pink films will survive. also, is the Olympics the main reasons for all these accumulating attacks and step backwards? Mosaics, uncensored movies/arrests, school girl theme, coercing scandals, etc really cause the av industry to scale back. If this continues, we might only be left with vanilla sex without plot very soon. No more controversial theme like "fans", r***, gangbang, etc. however, av is just one part of the cleaning process. The real stuffs probably be prostitution, soap land, escorting services, and crazy clubs in roppongi. Some really love to target foreigners.

With all these scale back and bad press, I expect some laid offs and pay cut, which might drive some girls to retire and discourage others to join. Most are staying because they don't have any other skills and av maybe shameful in the public eyes and kind of hypocritical to those that can't live without it, but it's easy money. It's not like everyone can find a sugar daddy, boyfriend, or mainstream opportunities. Some probably will escort to make up the difference in income. However, I still don't think av will die, but it will definitely face more drawbacks in the near future. It will drive fans away especially we seen and experience better.

Easy fix make it college theme. So I don’t think this is realistic first off it cuts off like 50% of the jav industry, it may not be popular as of now but still pretty big theme throughout its history and like in all industries it’s going through a down phase and will jump back up. to actually make this work in a relevant way they’d have to mess with the mainstream, because there are many very perverted HS based anime’s out there you have to go there to effect JAV, and I don’t think the police would do that

People like to see High school uniform on a high school set. College is like just other young girl theme. It's not inter exchangeable like soapland vs Onsen titles

Well I am against censorship as a general principle. But on children sexploitation, I am on the moralistic side of the fence. Indeed, just shift the background slightly to colleges and universities is a good fix. I think 18 years old is a good cut-off number. We all love young girls but make the cut off at 18, there are enough late boomers (especially for Asian girls) so even at 18 you can find all kinds of body types to satisfy all kinds of perverts. Actually yes Tsubomi may be 38 years old but she can still pull of as teenager.

The problem with high school theme isn't just there's underage girls doing sex. I mean that's the reality. I mean at 14, 15 years old, a lot of girls aren't virgins. That's reality, mostly (I hope) are boys and girls of similar age fooling around. Not 40 year old guys (especially teachers, doctors and police) molesting/raping underage girls. These high school vids make it seem ok for old creeps to molest young girls. I support free sex, but it should be with consent not with a huge age/power imbalance.

But I admit... recent years highschool AV theme changed a bit too. In bad old days, every highschool AV is a r*** fantasy. Now you get a lot more carnivorous highschool girls.

But the next question is: how long/sustained is this crack down? Or it's like those mosaic thickness thing, some years it's thicker then it gets thinner and swing back and forth. Or like the ban on outdoor AV, lasted less than a year.

more due to demographic changes in Japan. It's an aging population, low birth rate, no immigration.

That's debatable, I'm curious where's the highschool, esp. boomer, fan base? Is it young men in or left high school not too long ago? I think, more like, the school girl molestation vids are for old guys.

Low birth rate may actually drive up demands for young girls on DVD.

No immigration so WHAT? Where do you come up with these connections?

I suspect that has to do with uniforms and logos belonging to the schools. Like if they used uniforms of a pro baseball team it would be the same problem.

Right. Immigration of younger people has no effect on the average age of the population. Lack of immigration is not the reason Japan has older population than USA, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, etc. Yeah, it's a totally ridiculous idea. I don't know what I was thinking. My apologies.

Ok then. But don't apologize, i think we are all entitled to some careless remarks and hyperlobes. I have a few myself, and i don't think its necessary to be too uptight about precision and accuracy. You fire some shots, I fire a few back, its all good. Like yakking about nothing in a bar.

The annoucement of top 100 searches on DMM reaffirm the theory that the market is changing :-

Top 5 search :-

1位 熟女
2位 巨乳
3位 痴,漢
4位 中出し
5位 人妻

and the rest :-

Schoolgirl sits at 58. Reason behind the shift is unknown.

That's admirable. But my beliefs is that, unless you have no taste for that genre in the first place, why deny yourself the pleasure when the production meets the legal prerequsitions and you are rational enough to differentiate reality and fantasy ? Just because the idea behind the video does not sit right with you ? Ultimately it's your call.

I'm not sure if DMM's search results can be considered valid or not. I think there's a good chance they are, BUT due to their studio ownership and distribution situation, it's possible that they're skewing results to push categories that are 'safer' to produce.

Again, their results probably legit, but something non-biased like Google Japan results (along with DUGA, Sokmil, even Amazon JP, etc.) for adult terms would be a better way to gauge genre popularity.

https://twitter.com/TMA_OFFICIAL_PR/status/944074098103091200 → schoolgirl release by TMA going up next month. I haven’t seen the title nor cover, but those are bona fide uniforms on young AV stars. Genre may have lesser popularity today, but it’s far from dead.

TMA are certainly playing it safe by neither confirming nor denying that the roles being portrayed are highschoolers with the censoring of that specific kanji.

We will see if the new regulations are being implemented in the actual release.

I've seen studios censor parts of the Kanji for school-related themes for many, many years. You can see that happening way back in the early 2000's.
Either way though, it's nice to see a studio pushing out a nice schoolgirl title for 2018.
