No doubt. Yet that which we are unfamilar with is by nature and definition. "strange".
In hentai Futanari is used by an artist/writer to express a certain view or to enhance his tale in a certain way. Futanari aren't always gay, (if you are both sexes can you be gay?), nor are they always meant to represent hermaphrodites. They are most often used to display both male and female characteristics in an individual. This allows the writer to make indirect commentaries about male and female roles in society, not only sexually but in social areas as well. This is my opinion based on my experience with the subject matter anyway.
I think futa is considered it's own sort of genre as far as if it's straight or gay. Plus, they have different kinds of futas too. Usually it's just a penis on a girl, but everything else is female, but I've seen a few doujin where they had testicles too.
Personally, I don't really see it as gay, no mater if it's futa and female, or futa and male. Then again, I'm bi with a huge tendency towards women anyway, so I never really even put any real thought into if it was gay or not for me because a futa is mainly a girl or not.
