On average, the world sees only one or two earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 or higher.

In April 2014, however, there were 13 major earthquakes around the world as the
Tsunami Warning Center Pacific.

Global Earthquake Animation: January - April 2014.

This all started with the large earthquake in Iquique, Chile on April 1, 2014, followed
by another one near the Solomon Islands, and others in Nicaragua, Mexico, Canada
and even unusual in the South Atlantic.
