• How common is it for performers to move frequently between studios?

I think you might find Kaho Shibuya's book interesting. It should answer all your questions. The Japanese Porn Industry Unmasked: An Insider’s Guide I downloaded it from Amazon to my Kindle.

But answers to your questions are:

There are big studios like Madonna, Alice, Attackers and Fitch. Typically they will sign a newcomer to an exclusive agreement to perform only for them for a period of time or number of films. Once the actress has fulfilled that contract, they can either re-sign or become freelance and work with multiple studios.

The "amateur" stuff features amateurs sometimes but also feature established actress. One actress I follow is Miyako Hori and she appears in mainstream and amateur stuff. My guess is that the amateur productions don't have nearly the prestige that big studios do and of course they lack the writing, direction and production values of the larger studios.

I think all actresses decide their boundaries. My avatar is Yuko Shiraki who is one of my favorite actresses but I've never seen a film where she does anal or hard BDSM. Reiko Sawamura, now retired, did almost everything and that's why I love her! I think there are some actresses who find a niche like Yukino Matsu and do really hard stuff. That’s why I’m also a bit confused about what qualifies as “amateur” videos.

1. Could you please give an example of a studio that’s considered amateur? Or at least a film code that fits that category?
2. And this is something I find quite interesting — I’ve noticed that many actresses debut with major studios but don’t appear in many videos. Yet, in that one or few appearances, they already perform in extreme practices. Is that a demand from someone, or something else?
