Dear Akiba Online Admins.

Bit torrent, share, emule, winny, perfect dark are history. They are slow, not encrypted, not anonymous, centralized...

With this thread I want to introduce the superb open-source, free, anonymous, decentralized, encrypted and easy to use software Retroshare.

I want to ask the owner of Akiba Online to move the entire project to Retroshare. All Akiba Online users please try out the software and advise the AO admins. Akiba Online is the best community for Japanese porn on the net. Akiba Online on Retroshare is the next generation.

RetroShare is the next generation sharing network, which provides:
  • Reliable Identification and Authentication of your friends.
  • Plus an Introduction Scheme which connects you to the friends of your friends, and facilitates network growth.
  • Encrypted Communication, ensuring all shared information is known only to you and your peers.
  • A Communication Platform which can potentially support services such as Secure Email, File Sharing, Streaming, Video or Voice over IP, Photos, Wall and Messaging
  • A Decentralised Social Sharing Network designed **For the People** with no dependancies on any corporate system or central servers.

It is the most secure and truly anonymous, combining Freenet and Tor technology.

  • Never again torrent downloads that don't complete
  • Never again will file hosts delete cumbersomely uploaded DVDs
  • Akiba Online Admins have full control over forums, chat, etc.
  • share your entire Japanese Porn collection anonymously or publicly with one click
  • download completely anonymous and encrypted with Tor/Freenet technology
  • RS is serverless, completely decentralised; it can not be censored or shut down
  • Japanese junior idol DVDs can finally be downloaded by everyone with RS who was hesitant to download them with non-anonymous torrent software or website downloads
  • Multiple simultaneous downloads / uploads anonymously
  • Search Friends
  • Messages in Email client tradition
  • Forums, anonyously (not pseudoanonymously)
  • Channels in RS for special topic downloads
  • Voice over IP
  • Instant messaging
  • Groupchat of Akiba Online users with RS possible, no extra software required
  • GnuPG Authentication
  • OpenSSL Encryption, strong encryption, your ISP can not eavesdrop
  • adding downloads via website links
  • Plugins support
  • UPnP / NAT-PMP port forwarding support
  • Graphical User Interface written with Qt4 toolkit
  • System tray integration

From everything I can find it's not really that anonymous. You have to be connected to at least one "friend" who then has your IP address. When you connect to their friend, and share keys, you then have another person who has your IP, and so forth.
BT is not meant to be anonymous, it's for sharing.
Freenet is slow, but the way it works no peers know what you are doing, in RS they would.
TOR is somewhat slow, but is anonymous and reliable. It's not completely secure, but should suit fine for what happens here.

If you have a small circle of close trusted friends you want to chat with securely, then it looks like a fine program. Being it can't be monitored, it can't be censored, and it can't be moderated makes it not fit for the purposes of what is shared here.

lolwut?

Well whatever you have in mind, I see it as a complement of what is already proposed here (torrents, direct downloads, Usenet). I don't think we will "move" to some ultra-secret P2P hub in the next 1000 years.

Akiba Online is the best community for Japanese porn on the net.

I am sure hothothot had the best of intentions but this one statement answers his own question. For Akiba-Online to remain the number one place for Japanese porn it must continue to be as accessible as possible.

Just a reminder, this is more than just a Japanese porn stop, there are plenty of other shares here as well. This forum is what we make of it and most posts concerning Japanese culture are welcome here. If you want more Japanese music, games, tv and movies here... ya gotta share them. A forum revolves around its' members.

Well aren't there new laws in Japan with heavy fines? Sharing is becoming more and more difficult. So it is only a question of time until AO has to move to a private platform.

And yes BudEWiser, Retroshare is anonymous. You didn't read carefully. You can download through 6 hops and even hide the content you share from your immediate friends.

sounds like your 'Reliable Identification and Authentication of your friends.' doesn't match with "anonymous, decentralized"

You can'have both.

anonymous: from your ISP and routers along the way
Reliable Identification and Authentication of your friends: it does this well

I used the program that this is based heavily on for years, before it went out of active development years ago. It was the same thing basically. It's private and decentralized, but it's not anonymous. It would take a much larger connected network to hide your file sharing stuff within. If it's all users from here, it's not hard to at least point the conspiracy to facilitate illegal file sharing finger at you.
And it would only take one member being caught with something illegal on their computer, to drag the rest of the connected peers down being accused of being part of a "RING".

Again, the problem with these types of systems is that to avoid a potential link with the particular activity, there has to be a fairly large base of non linked users using it too. The only way that is safe safe is a small group of personally known peers, using a completely darknet solution. That's not going to happen with A-online because not enough people know enough people personally who wouldn't rat them out if they got busted.
This is why the darknet part of freenet doesn't work so well. Once linked together, and one gets in trouble who has their security minimal, they can claim that they are part of a "ring" of whatever illegal activity the ONE got in trouble for. If nothing else, it's enough to have the home raided, and life ruined just because of the suspicion that you are part of something bigger. Guilt by association.
Like I said, the precursor to this was http://sourceforge.net/projects/waste/
For a small group of friends getting together to chat in complete privacy, yes it is is nice. But the part I won't do is share my IP address with other members here who I don't know or trust. Another thing with retroshare that seems to be a carryover from waste, you don't get to pick and choose who you are connecting to, or being routed through. If they are on your friends list, it's constantly trying to connect to them when the program is running. This is a security risk, if the other end is compromised.
