So has any news or rumors come up about why AKB48 "Rico" or her sister made this choice? Was it blackmail of some kind? A compromising photo or incriminating evidence against a family member? Sarakin debt? Gambling debt? Drug addiction/debt? Have their parents committed seppuku yet?

Don't get me wrong, if there was no coercion and the girls were truthfully informed of the circumstances then of course no-one has more of a say in what these girls can do with their bodies than they themselves.

But the psychological effects of having done something like this can be drastic, there are many lines that can be crossed over only once in life, such as killing another person, or selling your body like this, from which there can be no return.

Even if that person eventually rises to the pinnacle of honor and respectability in society, their culture and values had set (or instilled in their minds) a powerful boundary which they nevertheless crossed. For better or worse, the effects will be permanent. (As an afterthought, perhaps this boundary has significantly weakened in the minds of younger generations with the proliferation of enjo kousai)

The best outcome of course, is that they manage to find peace (if they feel the need for it) with themselves and their choices and can lead happy, productive, fruitful lives.

Who gives a frack? I mean really all I care about is that maybe if we are lucky we can get more of these hot Japanese "singers" (who by the way can barely sing which is why they are throw into a group of 48 girls screeching on stage who all just happen to be gorgeous) to follow in the footsteps of these two fine sisters. I mean really this one of those few times where we see two truly young sisters get into the business for the enjoyment of all of us. I'm hoping soon we will see more hardcore stuff with the Yamaguchi sisters.

Well it's a puzzling case as to why a large sum of money was needed, and apparently in such a short period of time perhaps?

All the philosophizing aside though, don't you think it just plain sucks to have to screw an ugly old guy? Even on the Japanese comments guys complain about the fugly males that appear so often.

Why not let her have a handsome young man at least once in a while? At least then her moans, kisses, and acting would be more believable simply because of how viewers would see the situation.

Anyway, my primal instincts certainly do appreciate the productions by the "Yamaguchi" sisters, but I can get off on her and yet also still hope she's doing well, right? Nothing says you can't have both at the same time. :evillaugh:

Considering that a sizeable number of AV actresses in Japan are scouted, is there any reason in particular why you think Rina would necessarily have been coerced into the AV industry?

And why must her parents consider committing seppuku? Is it impossible for Japanese families to have fights/disagreements like normal families anywhere else?

While being an AV actor/actress isn't a highly regarded profession in Japan (as anywhere else), the concept of it being (psychologically) degrading is something you project onto it (and we owe such beliefs largely to Western religion). What you assume "must" be degrading to a person may not be degrading at all, in their own mind. To many AV actresses, the industry is an easy way to earn a little extra money, and no worse to their body/mind than clubbing and having casual sex with strangers.

Also, I fail to see why enjo-kousai would have any correlation. Enjo-kousai isn't even prevalent in Japan, period. It exists, but typical "underage sex" among teenagers is far more pervasive than the occurance of enjo-kousai. When you talk about the "proliferation of enjo-kousai", you're really talking about the proliferation of foreigners' fascination with the concept of enjo-kousai.

It's callous to take a general perspective (eg: on AV having "permanent psychological effects"), analyze a single case, and expect a predetermined outcome as if no AV actress has ever been capable of leading a normal life after their involvement in the industry. And I think resorting to addages of "wacky Japan" (seppuku, enjo-kousai, etc) is simply disingenuous and inappropriate. In one fell swoop you've denied Rina the courtesy of being human (youthful desire, foolishness, self-confidence, and any other emotion other normal AV actresses feel), and reduced her family's burden to mere tabloid fodder.

Not sure if you're looking for some sort of vindication, but if you are actually interested in news, you may find my previous posts in this thread (concerning her presumed involvement in AV) enlightening.

It's a possibility. It's also possible, for example, that she could've been coerced into joining AKB48 if she has for example, those over-obsessive parents who push their children to join junior beauty pagaents. As my post indicated, I acknowledge that it may have been her own choice entirely, but the possibility that she was coerced to some degree, is plausible.

And why must her parents consider committing seppuku?

That was a joke. :defeat:

Is it impossible for Japanese families to have fights/disagreements like normal families anywhere else?

Of course not, it would be delusional and/or extremely ignorant to suppose that they do not.

There is no disagreement here, I did not, and did not intend to make any of the contentions you have raised issue with. It's something societies and cultures project unto the minds of its denizens, which is what I wrote. And that she further could have no issues with it is entirely possible, it's true.

To many AV actresses, the industry is an easy way to earn a little extra money, and no worse to their body/mind than clubbing and having casual sex with strangers.

But see I'm one of the millions of persons who find the prospect of "clubbing and having casual sex with strangers" to be evidently self-destructive, conclusively irrational, and immeasurably pernicious to contemplate. Again, this is only my individual view of how healthy and fulfilling this lifestlye would be for myself and many other people, I acknowledge that there may be many people who could flourish and find happiness with such lifestyle choices.

I also fully and unconditionally acknowledge that people of course can make their own choices and have their own reasoning and all rights to do what they wish in that regard, the same with people who choose to smoke cigarettes or ride without a seatbelt or eat lots of red-meat. Varied circumstances and beliefs lead to varied conclusions.
.
Also, I fail to see why enjo-kousai would have any correlation. Enjo-kousai isn't even prevalent in Japan, period.

Even the existence of the media debacle though, will have instilled the societal consciousness with the idea that there are students who sell their bodies for money. The societal awareness of this behavior (regardless of its debatable prevalence) is what I intended to write about, and what possible effects this might have on the paradigms younger individuals hold with regards to the perception of sex. I do not have comprehensive knowledge, nor do I presume to be authoritative on the subject of Enjo-Kousai.

It exists, but typical "underage sex" among teenagers is far more pervasive than the occurance of enjo-kousai.

Alas, I agree, from what many sources report it seems like many Japanese youth are becoming as promiscuous as Parisians. I'm not sure what long-term effects this may have on Japanese society though.

When you talk about the "proliferation of enjo-kousai", you're really talking about the proliferation of foreigners' fascination with the concept of enjo-kousai.

Actually as I wrote earlier, I was referring to media reporting (sensationalist or otherwise) of the phenonmenon. But certainly it's true that gaijin are infinitely interested in Enjo-Kousai.

It's callous to take a general perspective (eg: on AV having "permanent psychological effects"), analyze a single case, and expect a predetermined outcome as if no AV actress has ever been capable of leading a normal life after their involvement in the industry.

Any career will have permanent psychological effects, as for the other issues, I did not imply, and did not mean to imply any of them. As far as I know it is entirely possible for an AV actress to have a "normal" life after their tenure.

And I think resorting to addages of "wacky Japan" (seppuku, enjo-kousai, etc) is simply disingenuous and inappropriate.

The first (Seppuku) was a joke, and the second (Enjo-Kousai) was miscommunicated.

In one fell swoop you've denied Rina the courtesy of being human (youthful desire, foolishness, self-confidence, and any other emotion other normal AV actresses feel), and reduced her family's burden to mere tabloid fodder.

I did not deny that Rina is human in any capacity, I only cited the possibility that there may have been coercion involved, although "her family's burden" as you put it, is certainly tremendous tabloid fodder. As I indicated earlier, a large part of why I wrote these posts is because I felt concern for her, and hoped she was not coerced into anything. Granted these concerns of mine won't do anything to help anyone, but they compelled me to post.

Not sure if you're looking for some sort of vindication, but if you are actually interested in news, you may find my previous posts in this thread (concerning her presumed involvement in AV) enlightening.
Thank you, I'll go check it out right now. Thanks for responding to my questions.

=============EDIT===========

Ok, I've read the entire thread, and especially noticed your post here:

And being an independent musician is even harder. Frankly, AKB members (and most pop idol girls) don't earn all that much money. Enough to survive in Tokyo with a little extra to play once in a while, but not enough to secure a career. And composing by herself is a joke; she'd have to go to school and take classes on music composition, considering how all of that was done for her when she was in AKB.

Although we will never know the real reason why Rina went JAV, it most likely has to do with how, when she moved to Tokyo to be in AKB, she often felt lonely and therefore was impressionable to an extent. And how she seemed to really enjoy the popularity and living in Tokyo, and probably had some aversion to giving it up and returning home. And by her own admission of losing her virginity to a random AKB staff, her comfort with her own sexuality.

On that last sentence, just to be a "devil's advocate" here, the possibility completely exists though, that she may have been intimidated, or was drugged, or drunk, or simply talked into going out and then manhandled to a hotel. It's possible that this "staff member" may have made promises to influence her career positively, or threaten it decisively. All of this is speculation but all of it is plausible. I personally certainly hope that the possibilities I brought up did not occur, and that you, guy, are correct, i.e. that she grew comfortable with her own sexuality.

As a side note though, it's positively heart-breaking to me the idea that a girl would give her virginity to some "random" guy (although I certainly understand it happens countless times everywhere every single freaking day), as opposed to someone she really liked or perhaps even loved. Hopefully the word "random" is not actually entirely appropriate here, and she did at least like the guy or there was no coercion involved. But as you wrote, we will never really know.

Since Rina really wasn't popular enough to get other jobs in entertainment, JAV probably seemed like an easy way for her to keep her pop idol lifestyle.

I find the assertion that "JAV" would ever seem "easy" to be dubious. As far as I know a choice like this may easily be one of the most tremendous and affecting choices (whether positive or negative) an individual can make in their life, that is, whether to prostitute themselves.

It's clear, guy, that you've contributed decisively to this thread, and any further updates would be greatly appreciated. It would just be one of those little things that makes the world seem just slightly less horrible if there was more info forthcoming that she made this choice without significant external coercion.

Never underestimate what women will do for money. Answer: Anything. That's the reason I like Tokyo Hot stuff... I am constantly amazed at what beautiful women will do just for money. i.e., Twenty shots in the can? No problem.

Anyways sometimes I am a bit bored with the latest Rico and Riku productions because Rico has lost that innocent look she had in her first couple of videos (and we know it was real). It was awesome to watch her transition from awkward first timer to experienced pipe cleaner. Its amazing to see how fast that transition happens... by her fourth video you can tell she's gotten use to it.

On the other hand, Riku never had that innocent look. I get the feeling Riku was the "popular" girl in high school. LOL. One reason I like Rico much more. I'd pay good money for a chance to provide the wood in one of her videos.

How can you tell? So much of it can be and is faked, the flush cheeks, the moans of course, the resisting body language, the head-shaking, and of course the obligatory "kimochi yokatta desu" (rofl) at the end of some films.

This is why amateurs are so good when it comes to this, when it's a couple, at least it's a lot more credible in every respect. I mean how does anyone know if she wasn't a nympho who stalked keitai hookup websites like a starving carnivore before she made her "debut"?

Maybe that first AV pipe laid into her entered a yawning gap fit for Mordor? Maybe she was so bored during those first moans she was thinking of what to have for dinner or planning her taxes. Certainly if you read the memoirs of prostitutes they will often assert that:

1. Faking it is a powerful psychological tool for letting them feel still in control of their bodies and their selves.

2. They do things like go over the multiplication tables in their head while laying there like a 鮪 dead fish.

Porn actresses may not have what most would think of as conventional "acting skills", but they sure as heck do buttloads of acting.

Well we do know for a fact she wasn't in porn prior to her debut. And had she been a very naughty girl, it would have made the tabloids prior to the surprise career choice. So I am guessing there is a bit of a good girl gone bad here and I love that. Haha.

Like most categories of secrets, for every one secret that gets out in the open, there are probably at least 3 or 4 more that go unknown, except in very rare cases.

For every "Yamaguchi Riko" there's probably at least 3 or 4 undiscovered/unreported recent or current idols prostituting in some way. (see JPN - http://www.narinari.com/Nd/20081110579.html)
English Blog post about it:
Kohinata Minako, 23 year-old ex-gravure idol who was fired by her agency months ago, uncovered the taboo of Japanese show business industry on a magazine. Kohinata was fired for her health problem and absence without leave in the late of September. And on the latest issue of Shukan Post, as if to revenge to the Japanese show business industry which cut her, Kohinata uncovered everything she knows. In the shocking article titled 'I saw the nightmare 'the sideline was prostitution', Kohinata uncovers the details of prostitution held in Japanese show business industry. “There is a system like a 'Date Club', and there are some people who earn the money by introducing the girls. Some of them are people from the black market. I saw a lot of gravure idols who do it as a sideline.' And there is a ranking from A to D of these idol prostitute decided by their face or popularity. According to another person in show business agency, it is a custom of Japanese show business industry that some poor talentos do prostitution helped by the agency they belong to. Their salary is low, and they have to make their living. And as the new idols appear one after another and it's very easy to get a job...

For every Aya Hirano seiyuu there's probably at least 3 or 4 (or 20) Toyosaki Aki's.
http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2011/10/08/otaku-learn-aki-toyosaki-lives-with-boyfriend-yui-is-dead/

For every John Edwards, Newt Gingrich, or Berlusconi sleazebag politician there's at least ... well ... all of them are.

But if it were true, that "Riko" were a sex fiend (in the hypothetical sense I brought up earlier) before her debut, then like you, capricanoe, I would find it less appealing in a certain way, but a corny moral side of me would be glad she wasn't really half-r***ing in her first few AV productions.

Although to be honest, at the end of the scenes in her first few works, looking at her reaction, she really seemed okay with it and only pretending to be flustered.

In her debut DV-1184, instead of looking like: "It hurt and it wasn't fun, but I will smile for my viewers and say kimochi yokatta desu." it looked more like: "Ugh, I can't wait to take a shower. There better be cigarettes somewhere in this damn studio. Oh I almost forgot to do the 'it hurt and it wasn't fun, but I will smile for my viewers and say kimochi yokatta desu' act."

Maybe more experienced watchers of AV will have a different take on it, but that's kind of what it looked like to me.

It must be the gender studies in college that make guys think women are all victims to the patriarchies manipulations. There are a lot of women who will do practically anything for money. Whether because they don't have the brains, or work ethic to make it by other means. And of course some like it - given they get paid alot of money.

I agree that Rico's output started to go down hill once she joined SOD.

She traded in freshness and originality for production values. I watched three of Ricu's flicks and they are way ahead of anything Rico has done.

I'm looking forward to this tag team they are doing, but I think I'm going to be disappointed given Rico's conservative direction of late. Wait and see.

I agree. Aside from the novelty of who Rico was before, she's getting boring. Somebody needs to get her on Tokyo Hot pronto. Her sister on the other hand has been more interesting but her last two videos have been unexciting. That silly video of her groped on the bus or whatever it was supposed to be (and later scene at the movie theater) has been a real low-point.
