Damn. There it is. Best of luck to those who worked at R18, I hope DMM has taken care of you or you can find a new opportunity somewhere else:

Wasn't really surprised when I got that e-mail. R18 has been dying for months now.

This is bullshit. Anyone know UNDRM process?

That is brutal and absolutely devastating. Cutting off file authentication and in effect permanently sinking purchases is a hell of a way to go out.

Can only hope that there are third party options that rise to the challenge and can handle the sort of encryption locking these files up.

Feels like a long time ago all you needed to do when downloading pirated software was fool/disable the authentication mechanism and be on your way. Doesn't seem to be that simple anymore.

My chief concern at this point is not the 900+ titles I am losing in the sinking of R18, but replacing the choice elements of my collection.

Outside of going back to Japan and finding DVD copies, which is possible (Although some of the older titles might be hard to find), not really many good options. Couldn't the same fate befall DMM in another few years?

I am almost reluctant to buy anymore on there at this point after seeing this go down...

There is something I saw called JAV-IT If you search for Remove DRM from R18/DMM: View videos your way! you should see it. It costs 4.99 may it may be worth it. Has anybody tried it?
EDIT: It does work.

Wtf. We bought those movies and now they going to take away our ownership? Wtf!?. Is there anyway we can play those movies that we downloaded not using their R-player?
yes - look up streamfab r18 downloader
You will have to pay for it, but you can then download your purchased movies as MP4s

when you buy anything from down loading sites, whether it is JAV, mainstream hollywood films, or from any genuine source, you NEVER own it, you only pay for the right to watch it, that is what the digital age does,
And the same goes for any money goes into your bank, it is tracked constantly, so always use cash when you can, and do not use the card only stores,

You can back up all your R18 videos

Step 1. Download browser extension "Video DownloadHelper"
Step 2. Set video to HD
Step 3. Open extension and scroll down to the last "R18.com video player"

1.png

Step 4. Copy URL
2.png

5. Download two programs called YoutubeDL and FFMPEG
YouTubeDL tutorial
FFMPEG tutorial

6. Once you got both of these set up, paste the copied url in to command prompt with shift + insert
3.png

7. Once you hit enter, the video will be downloaded to the directory your YouTubeDL is installed in

This is so fucking awful. There's not gonna be a recovery where you have one site with hundreds of studios. Damn, man. think about how much will be lost.

Developer tools can be used as an alternative to the extension if you are willing to do a bit of manual work yourself to avoid an extension. Like the paid options I see up above, video downloadhelper is also a convenience thing in that it does the work of "opening" developer tools, navigating to find the media object and gathering the link within it.

In terms of a self-check for yourself. Notice your link has 6000000 in it. That lines up to the 6Mbps in your extension. Lower quality and resolution videos will be lower numbers.

As an aside, I wonder how many people will start doing these various methods and what the strain will be like on R18 servers. And 4-5 months turnaround with 3 months of no purchasing seems a bit short to me given this isn't a fly-by-night operation.

Except there's no other porn site that I know of does this. They would just simply let us download .mp4 media files and keep it indefinitely as soon as we subscribe, regardless of what happens to the site or the studio. Only R18 forces us to use their proprietary media player to play their own files. And now they f***ed us up. I have just around 70 tittles. But there are people with hundreds in their collection. It will take a lot of time & money to find and buy those movies back, especially older ones.

This is what you should expect when you "buy" DRMed content, you don't own shit.

You should buy games from GOG rather than steam for instance.

How about video quality? It's not like screen capture quality right? I hope it's as good as javf.h-era.org video quality. I already ask their team if they accept DRM removal service but they busy with their collection also.

R18 like any website that offers streaming needs to send you video files to play the movie or TV episode. The guide you see up above is showing you how to download the video files and assemble them into a playable movie.

The quality should be at least as good as a screen capture but probably better. When you record your screen you need to estimate bitrate, resolution and you have to start and stop the recording. There are lots of opportunities for video quality loss. But when you are downloading the actual video chunks sent to you in the exact bitrate and resolution intended you should not experience any loss in quality.

I don't know what the website you contacted does but I would bet it is very similar to what bukkakearchiver listed up above.

Where does FFMPEG come in, you didn't explain that part. And at the end will you end up with a playable title?

Is it not necessary in this case? I know you post a lot of content so wondering if you could elaborate.

I don't know if this is true for R18 because I haven't done any checking of my own and I'm no expert but ffmpeg can do many things.

I would imagine if it's being used in this process it's likely being used as a muxer. What do I mean by that? Lets say audio and video files are separate like say on a youtube video.

ffmpeg will work with youtube-dl or yt-dlp to modify and join the pieces together for you to create a usable output.
