Perhaps the reason that so much fuss is made over the Japanese sex industry is that, in almost every other aspect of its society and culture, Japan is considered to be such an immensely safe, polite and altogether nice place to be.

The country whose tourists are often reputed to be among the most polite and agreeable, and where your lost mobile phone or wallet usually finds its way back to you, Japan would not be anyone’s first guess when asked “Which country has a booming, recession-defying porn industry?”

Be that as it may, the Japanese AV (adult video) industry, whose revenue comprised more than 20% of worldwide sales according to a 2006 survey, continues to grow every year. And with that growth comes an increasing number of young women who aspire to work in the industry, as reported here on RocketNews24 just a couple of weeks ago.

But with so many girls taking a shot at being AV stars and entering into this seemingly glamorous but equally shady profession, how do they go about their daily lives unnoticed? And what becomes of AV stars who leave the industry?

In an interview with Atsuhiko Nakamura, author of books such as “The Nameless Women” and interviewer of literally hundreds of AV actresses, Shuplay News uncovered some startling facts about the sex industry in Japan, in particular the life of the women who become involved in making adult movies.

“Many girls enter the AV industry each year, but not necessarily all for the same reasons;” Nakamura comments, “some do it entirely for the money, while others are just comfortable with the idea of having sex in front of people and see it as any easy job. It just works for them.”

The Japanese AV industry reportedly sees an astounding 6,000 newcomers each year. But surely the risk of being seen on a video would be enough to dissuade any self-respecting young woman from doing such a thing?

“With the huge number of girls working in the industry, cases of AV actresses being recognised while going about their daily lives are quite rare,” says Nakamura, adding “there are plenty of cases of former AV girls who are now happily married and enjoying normal lives.”

In many cases, girls do a short spell making XXX videos, and then, perhaps having earned enough to support themselves financially, or simply deciding that they have had enough, choose to leave and pursue a more orthodox lifestyle. After all, few people actively working in the porn industry are seen out shopping with their kids or taking part in PTA meetings without those around them raising a few eyebrows…

But it is here that many retired AV models hit a wall, says Nakamura, describing what he calls the “AV-nō” (lit. Adult Video brain”); the “AV Mindset” that many girls find themselves unable to shake off.

“A lot of girls find themselves unable to return to regular jobs after working as an AV model;” explains Nakamura, “they have worked in an often lucrative business, some for many years, so to go back to a standard job for a much smaller salary is not easy”, he tells. “Around two thirds of retired AV models end up in the sex industry, working in hostess bars or even working as prostitutes in ‘soap-land’ bath houses.”

It would seem that, of those thousands of girls initially seeking an easy, well-paid life as a porn-star, literally thousands of them become trapped in the sex industry afterwards.

The “AV Mindset” that Nakamura speaks of has two distinct sides to it; while there are some retired AV models who lack the skills required to work in regular jobs, and who find themselves in the strange position of feeling more comfortable in environments like hostess bars, there are also women who, despite wanting to stop making sex tapes, are unwilling to return to an everyday lifestyle and lose all the trappings and relative glamour that came from their wealthy AV lifestyle.

Nakamura compares this way of thinking to writers who, at the peak of their game being paid hundreds of dollars for articles, suddenly have the rug pulled out from under them and are forced to work for just 20 or 30 dollars per piece.

“Some writers refuse to do it out of pride or shock. Some, on the other hand, simply can’t afford to go back to that and look for more lucrative work elsewhere.”

Just over two years ago, former AKB48 idol Rina Nakanishi was reported to have become an AV model (link Not Safe For Work) after her sudden departure from the popular group. While some suggested that, with such a huge existing fan-base, she would see incredible success, others- perhaps more reasonably- argued that, once the novelty of seeing a former pop star perform sexual acts had worn off, Nakanishi would be left out in the cold, disgraced and jobless.

The Japanese sex industry may well be one of the biggest in the world, but it’s clearly very dangerous ground to play in.

Stay in school, boys and girls.

i wonder what it's like for mature JAV actresses like Chisato Shouda, etc. She retired but came back recently.

Nice read.

I believe there's still hope for these for AV stars to get back to their former lives before joining the AV industry - its just a matter of having the right mind-set, and the determination to succeed!

with the business as big as the AV industry, i think there would be policies (self imposed and/or industry imposed) on keeping their bodies safe from STDs.

you don't really hear a retired/working AV actor/actress having such disease, do you ?

yes it hard for someone to go from one high paying job to low paying job. we have that issue in usa. it also comes down to the person too. here in usa porn industry some will go to school while they are porn stars. other find other ways to make money like going around state doing features show at strip clubs. where they get large amount up front and tips from stage dancing and lap dance. some even head to Nevada work at brothels since love to have sex all time. all comes down to person. she has to make choice on what she wants to do after her time is up. most can handle it other can not. it to bad there no study's or company's showing the girls what might happen after you leave. more will know what to expect.

In relation to this article I also like you to read this 2009 article, it will tell us why these girls choose to do these types of work.

Insider reveals the secrets of winning a fuzoku femme’s favor

Many women had the misfortune of gravitating to gloomy relationships with disreputable or violent partners

In its latest weekly installment of the ongoing memoirs of a veteran writer covering the pink trade, Nikkan Gendai (Nov. 5) suggests that when it comes to scribes who scribble about sex, seniority is certainly significant.
Why? While not citing his source, the writer claims that about 40 percent of female sex industry workers come from broken homes, and of these, a vast majority, perhaps over 80 percent, grew up without a father in the household.
Many, for reasons related to their unfamiliarity with males at home, grew up and had the further misfortune of gravitating to gloomy relationships with disreputable or violent partners.
“Many girls in the business have been hurt or disappointed by men in their own age group,” he explains. “So they tend to seek out older men based on their desire for a sense of security.”
Older men are also better at making conversation and are good at explaining the facts of life in ways that are easy to understand. A working girl is also more likely to feel gratitude when a man doesn’t treat her in a condescending manner.
For these reasons, the writer tells Nikkan Gendai, about one working girl out of five will bend the shop rules and accept his invitation to take a meal together.
Indeed, some of them are emotionally touched by such tender treatment.
“There have even been girls who embraced me in a hug while saying, ‘Daddy,’” he writes. “There’s a strong chance of becoming deeply intimate with such women.”
Of course, in these cases older men are cautioned not to erotically exploit the gal’s Electra complex, as this will make her feel she’s seen as a sex object. So rather than requesting it, it’s best to bide one’s time, nurture the relationship and wait for her to make the first move. (K.S.)

Most end up either married or in a routine job like office work it seems.

Is it really that surprising...?

:puzzled:

Hell, the current trend seems to shift more towards younger girls that only do it for a year or two then quit for that matter..

I'm confident that these AV Idols end up doing better than most porn stars in other parts of the world. Even better than in America, the richest nation in the world.

These girls don't want a normal job, that's why they came in the industry in the first place. What makes you think they want to go back for a normal job after they are done?

Of course I'm not involved in the industry, especially not in Japan, nor do I claim to have any insight on it, but I believe that in professional pornography the actors have to do regular check ups for STDs. At least shortly before shooting a movie. There has been a pretty huge scandal a few years back when a rather famous porn actor was diagnosed HIV positive and kept it to himself, continuing to "work". Ever since then it has become a standard to do testings. I'd say working as an actor for a halfway decent production company should guarantee a high degree of safety.

Again, I'm in no way entitled to give any professient input on this, but for once with every fifth of the population living below the poverty line, America is definitely not the "richest" nation, nor has it much to do with your chosen profession. Japan for example has (or had) the highest consumerist spending in the world, but that is partly because an average Japanese citizen lives with his parents until he/she is +/- 30 years old and thus has an extremely high spending for luxury goods etc. Yet you'll find plenty of poor/homeless people in highly populated areas. Regardless of location, nowadays the gap between lower and upper class gets bigger exponentially. Erotica/porn industry poses a resort for those on the edge.

I also might be wrong here, but I suppose that the majority of women wouldn't be as eager to work in this field as their male counterparts. If you have the choice between falling through the grid and porn, the decision becomes rather obvious. Of course there will be those women with a secure life who do it out of free will, but it seems to me that's the exception. As for success... I'm a very casual porn consumer to say the least and I can only name a few actresses that I could distinguish, such as Sora Aoi. It seems many girls appear as grey faces who star in a few productions and disappear as fast as they came. (LOL no pun intended) It is not really evident to me they earn enough to provide a comfortable retirement. Sure, those super stars will have a fat bank account, but at some point even the brightest of them has to face the fact they won't be young/attractive forever. Once you've reached your prime, it is only downhill. And then you're hoping to have enough to secure your retirement. Reality is: you're a "product". You either make it by marketing yourself and creating demand, or your career will be short lived. How exactly you achieve this is up to you. You have to creat a fanbase either by attractive looks and/or outstanding performances.

Just my useless ramblings on the subject. Good night everyone.

Thanks. More please. Some often neglected aspects.
The whole industry is a lie. Such is the illusion of "love". And that both could work side by side.
Then again, this might be the exact oposite of an appropriate place to discuss this topic ...
