Also, another factor contributing to the dark age of JAV that at least I and the thread starter are living through, 'cause apparently everyone else's fancies are tickled by the current state of JAV, is all the retirements. I don't know how many people care about Erika Kitagawa, but she was one of the best still around and she's gone now. Her retirement work came out two days ago.

She was Prestige's "flagship" so I'm really curious to see whom they're going to try to replace her with. I'm skeptical, because all those new girls mentioned in the hot new babes thread fail to do anything for me (except for Rinne Touka, of course), so I doubt they'll be able to get someone beautiful. Maybe they'll prove me wrong.
 
I just recently got into JAV, I particularly like lolis grannies, and milfs titles . I've noticed from looking at vid covers from 2013-2017 jav seems to be more tame. loli covers looked hella crazier now they mostly wear school outfits, milf and granny titles were crazy, basically said moms fucking their sons fakeccest. Now its step mom and sons. "IT" girls are now far and in-between in my opinion.
 
Eh, I think the quality of JAV remains consistently high. I suppose it depends on what your fetishes are. I don't know about the majority of new girls being ugly or meh, I've seen dozens of new girls who look great.
Also, JAV is a treat for guys like me who are into girls with short hair, because it's far more common in JAV than in western porn.
 
Right on on the fake boobs. It's very apparent now. I wish there was more like Reiko Yamaguchi, pretty face big natural tits and nice body.

Also, lots of younger actress are starting in mature roles which just doesn't fit at all.Back then they had actual mature looking ones who had some charisma and good acting ability.

I've been always fine with JAV, since the first time I watched it almost ten years ago. And I'm even more satisfied with the current JAV, as I can easily find and follow actresses on Twitter or Instagram, and the covers of movies are in a much better quality than those of a couple of years ago (sometimes the cover is the best part of a whole movie lol).

I usually follow only actresses working for big studios like S1, Moodyz, Idea Pocket, Prestigate... And they always look great in their videos. In many cases, they even look better in videos because many of their pics on social media are heavily affected by filters.
 
I disagree with the OP I think the girls are way hotter now not only that 100% want to do lesbian movies my fav genre. Out of top stars from the previous generation only a handful did lesbian. This is off topic I know but in America the LGBT population shot up and 90% of the increase comes from lesbian/bisexual women. I wonder if that is what happened in Japan too maybe this explains the declining birth rate. Women are discovering the joys of lesbian sex!
 
We always have to sort out a few factors when making such grandiose claim... dark age.... One factor is all of us (most of us) are nostalgic, we get old enough and remember the old stuffs as better than they really were. Because back then they were fresh, to our inexperienced eyes. Today even a very beautiful idol in a great vid may seem similar and repetitious to our jaded eyes.

A dark age is strong language, if you say we had a recession, yeah I agree we were in a JAV recession, no doubt. But I think we are actually getting out of it now. Since about mid or late summer, I have been seeing more JAV than I can watch (more than 2-3 a week). The massive wave of retirement slowed down, supply of hot new idols have returned, most of the genres that I care about are seeing regular release, government crackdowns have pretty much stopped. Scandals and bad news have also taking a break.

Blame the Tokyo Olympics. Lawmakers went after AV hard to clean up the country's image. Then, when actresses got the power to pull their titles from the shelves, labels lost a ton of money. Budgets went down all across the board.

All the negative press led to an already stigmatized industry becoming even less appealing to work in.

Don't expect things to get any better till post 2020.
