I actually have a 15 bay one, but 2 are empty and one is for the OS drive. They're also already 3TB drives since it's set up as two 6 drives RAIDZ2 array striped together(ZFS equivalent of RAID60) so I'm losing 12TB to redundency.
Just a simple server with vanilla FreeBSD as the OS with a lot of 3TB WD RED drives formatted as ZFS in a RAID configuration to prevent losing files to corruption or dead drives.

If you want specifics about the hardware(just replace the 2 WD black with a 60GB SSD and add 7 WD red and that's what I currently use): http://www.overclock.net/t/1351154/...-storage-general-purpose-server#post_19165202 which sits in my way too high 44U mostly empty server rack.

Is there any reason why your RAID setup need to be 12TB redundency?
I have a synology 12 bays station with another extension of 12 bays,
Total of 24 bays, But I just setup two RAID array.
each with one hard disk fail proof.
hhmm, why waste the 12TB??

I am not a pro on RAID, I bought that just to make sure I have a large storage.

I read the forum, a little bit technical, but manage to scroll through.
ahh I see, you buy a SATA controller to add more drive. I was wondering which motherboard can can so much sata controller.
I am currently having a cooler master full tower sitting on floor. Plan to invest and big a new storage machine.

When you have an array of over 9TB, it's recommended to have more than one disk of redundancy since if one of the disk dies, there's a good chance another one will while you rebuild the array after replacing it since it puts a lot of stress on them because they need to read non-stop on them for hours in a row and then you lose data.

I could have made a single array instead of two, but you can't make modifications to one once it's created in ZFS(for now at least) and I didn't have the money to buy all the drives at once. I also chose 6 because it gave better performance to split the drives that way and 12 would have been over the recommended limit if I'm not mistaken. I think 9 would have been good too, but I couldn't find a 20 bay case that met all my criteria(and I'm not made of money).

I may have gone a bit overboard, but I made it with data safety in mind and it almost can't be better than that(unless I'd gone with the equivalent of RAID10 which would have cost me 18TB, but would have eliminated the risk of losing a second drive when rebuilding).

If you plan on building one yourself, know that I went overboard with my CPU since I don't simply use it for storage(a regular i3 would be plenty fast for storage only) and I also went overboard with the HBA(the sas/sata controller) which could allow me to plug 8 ssd on it without any of them being slowed down(which is why it's the single priciest part in the build). You also don't need a real server motherboard and ECC RAM, although it doesn't hurt and help preventing more possible errors.
