Hey guys

is there a reason why lots of old-ish movies have different codes?

like this one; MVF-167 but also MADV-069

and while we're at it, why lots of movies are missing in JAVlibrary? is not like those movies are rare.... and I know that website is not "THE jav encyclopedia" but is weird that lots of them (sorry can't name one right now) are missing.

Hey,

That's an interesting question so might as well make my first post. Hi all.

So far what I have discovered is that with older videos, there could be a difference between a VHS and DVD release, for example:
JL-15 vs JLD-15

Perhaps in your case it's a different edition for a DVD and say, Download/Streaming? If you compare the covers, the middle-portion DVD back part is missing on MADV-069.

And then there are cases I cannot really explain.
Like the famous NSPS-220. You will not be able to look it up on e.g. JavCV, because it is actually SBNR-313 there.
Furthermore, Duga.jp often carries yet another code, like NAGAE-0272 in this case. It seems their code always carries a studio name and then a numerical sequence.

Here's hoping to hear from the more knowledgeable folks here.

That one is actually really easy to explain. This studio uses different codes for movies you can rent (stream either once or for a limited time, and back in the day DVDs you could rent at a video store) which are the SBNR ones, and codes for buying the movie (unlimited streaming or actually buying a DVD) which are the SBNS and NSPS codes.

I think the Duga codes are from that site itself and not from the studio. Most likely because two different studios can use the same code so they give everything an unique code so they know which one the buyer actually wants. (For instance, if you look up AP-001 on javlibrary it gives two different movies from different studios with different actresses.)

This ensnared me a bunch of times.
There is frequently a different code for a 'Rental' and a 'Sell' version of the same JAV.
But it is not always that. Go check my purchase lists in the Your Stash rubric here on Akiba-Online. I strove to indicate what are the codes of the JAV I bought, but which the box cover labelled as "RENTAL". This was common if you shopped TSUTAYA shops in the 2010s. At some date, the movies would go out of the rental queue and put on the shelf available for purchase. It was usually a quite good price like ¥250 | ¥300 (depending on the neighborhood of the TSUTAYA where it was offered). The major advantage for me was there were no cases for these JAVs. It was the clear cellophane sleeve with the box cover and the bare DVD inside. I did not have to break them down to make them fit in my suitcase, and I didn't have to bag up all those cases to place on the street for recycling. :D
