SYNOPSIS:
Teshigahara's film, Rikyu is centered on the complex relationship existing between Sen Rikyu and Emperor Hideyoshi Toyotomi. Though not all explained in the film, Rikyu had trained at a young age both in the Way of Tea and in Zen Buddhist practice. He was highly skilled in Ikebana, the art of Japanese floral arrangement, and in architectural, landscape and pottery design. He had risen to be the chosen Tea Master of Emperor Nobunaga Oda.
Hideyoshi, on the other hand, had grown up the son of a peasant farmer and his only education was military. He was an astute military tactician and via his military prowess rose to be a general to Emperor Nobunaga Oda, where by tradition all his other generals were hereditary leaders of the great houses loyal to the Emperor. Hideyoshi was very grateful to Oda for this and avenged his betrayal by Akechi Mitsuhide by defeating and killing him in battle. In doing so, though of humble origins, he became the next Emperor.
Hideyoshi continued Rikyu's position as royal tea master. The two very different men took to each other and developed a special bond. When Rikyu's daughter, Ogin refused Hideyoshi's advances, Hideyoshi felt slighted and never forgave Rikyu. Rikyu's very perfection in everything he did also aggravated Hideyoshi's sense of inferiority and lower class origins. When Rikyu's statue was placed above the gate of a temple that Rikyu had paid to be refurbished, Hideyoshi was again slighted to have to walk beneath it. All these aggravations were used in court politics to try to eliminate
Rikyu's influence on Hideyoshi.
Teshigahara follows this relationship from the last days of Nobunaga Oda's reign until Rikyu's forced ritual death. He weaves a beautiful blend of story and millieu in his film. The beauty of classical Japanese art, pottery, landscape, fabric design and architecture permeate scene after scene as the story is developed. He also elaborates Rikyu's spiritual and esthetic philosophy in a couple of core scenes. The end result is an extremely beautiful film both visually and in terms of the tragic end of the relationship. Teshigahara manages to show both the affection the men felt for each other and the psychological tensions that eventually made it impossible for Hideyoshi to continue their friendship and still save face as the emperor.
