Price of Smokes Could Go Up

Japanese politicians are now trying to pass legislature on raising taxes on tobacco in Japan which would mean the price of a pack would go up to ¥1000. This is about US 9.50. Nationwide, smokers are clamouring over the possibility.

Misc:

As of now a pack in Japan goes for about ¥300. Super cheap compared to most countries.

Japan is the world's third largest tobacco market after China and the US.

Smoking is known to cause cancer in humans and rats.

Im all for the tax increase. Maybe while they are at it they can lower the beer tax to even everything out. Beer in Japan is obscenely expensive. You dont even get a discount per can for buying a six-pack.

Those poor rats....

Even with the big increase it's still cheaper than many other countries, like the UK.

I find it shocking, yes, shocking that beer is expensive in Japan.

If Japan wishes exemplify virtue in this miserable world, the Diet will not only repeal the tax on beer, but apply the additional revenue generated by the tax on cigarettes to subsidize the distribution of beer.

"God made beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy."

Smokes, booze and fuel tax are easy targets for lazy governments looking to scrape more money from their citizens. Here in the UK the cost of a packet of 20 ciggies is about £6, booze in pubs is a joke and the cost of a gallon of unleaded is about £11 ffs!!!

Other governments will inevitably do the same, saying that they're doing it for the sake of the nation's health. Which is complete bullshit really cos in reality its a yet another regressive tax on the poor while the rich won't give a shit anyway cos they can afford the rise
