This is a rare Mizoguchi from the early sound era. It's an adaptation of a novel by Souseki Natsume and concerns a young scholar navigating the pitfalls of romance and social convention. Although the mise-en-scène is perhaps less elegant than in Mizo's later sound films, the silent-style ensemble staging is still quite complex. In any case, it's one of my favorite Mizo films.
