SYNOPSIS:
The island of Hokkaido, in Japan, is located near the Arctic Circle and is famous for its cold, snowy winters. In this understated drama, a celebrated writer is being shown some caves, which have glow-in-the-dark moss, by the local school headmaster. One cave has quite a history, as flashbacks show: during World War II, it was the wintertime shelter chosen by three shipwrecked sailors whose supply
vessel had sunk just off the coast. The harsh winter prevented them from seeking shelter in nearby settlements, and they slowly starved to death. However, before the first man died, the three agreed that each man who died would offer his body to sustain the lives of the others. Eventually, only the captain of the vessel survived. When he first emerged from the cave, he was greeted as a hero, but before long he was required to stand trial for the gruesome means of his survival. ~

When I watched the film, the part above about the men agreeing to offer their bodies to their shipmates if they died just isn't right. They dreaded the thought of being eaten and one even made his friend promise not to eat him if he died. This actually caused his friend to be the next to die of starvation. This film finds its real power from the script. The dialogues throughout are really believable and compelling. At first glance the plot doesn't sound all that interesting, but the human interactions and the deep psychological reactions to their situation and the
actions it forced them to take, make this a very compelling drama. The Captain who is the only survivor is deeply affected by his ordeal and his replies to questions during his trial make very interesting viewing.
As one would expect with Kei Kumai, this is a lot more than just an intersting story. He sourced it from the novel by Taijun Takeda which was based on a real incident. The film uses images that are both real and sureal, and I suspect follows the novel in trying to depict the emotional reality of the protagonist, especially as it moves toward the end during the trial scenes.
