Dreamroom is ‘exceptionally forward-thinking’ because from day one (or as far back as I recall at least), they’ve done the unthinkable: incorporate abroad in order to show uncensored Japanese AV solely (at first) on their own paysites. No initial physical releases, no commitments to distribution channels, etc. Rather, they went the western adult studio route almost from the get-go. I have to give them many props for that insanely risky move—by Japanese standards at least.

Decsis: the 10Musume girls aren't 100% pure amateur as in they were literally picked up off the streets then and there for filming. There are still contracts to sign, etc. Most likely they were scouted by agencies (or possibly applied on their own) and this was the one of their first AV 'gig'. I'll admit though that from just cursory searching, it appears like most who appear on 10Musume just do that before moving on with their lives. Not many seemed to have remained in AV after so you probably could consider them a close to amateur as reality allows.

tmas: I share your opinion to some extent. I've even wrote the same in many of our reviews for their movies (I can't recall which ones and some may not even be online yet).

The biggest and most obvious 'pro' for Dreamroom movies regardless of which site they film them for is the lack of mosaic. You're dead right that production-wise, they're usually more miss than hit. Specifically regarding their AV star output (amateur sites like 10Musume get a pass because they're supposed to have a homemade feel), I find the lighting at times to be too harsh, the editing a bit too hasty (zoom-in's/out's when a cut-away makes more sense), and it seems like they usually record right from the camera instead of using a boom mic. There's also been too many times to count where I've heard creaks of the board from the cameraman and/or background staff walking around which a good sound guy would make sure remain invisible to the ears.

I'm not a production guy so I could be wrong about the cause of the sound issue, but one of the things I've noticed as a subtitler is just how hard it is to make out what actors say in their movies. Many women naturally have a higher-pitched voice which makes it easier to pick up what they say, but combine less-than-favorable sound recording with gruff-talking men and you've a problem. Audio-wise, things really go to hell-in-a-hand basket when they start using vibrators. I've worked on titles from the early 2000's that seem to have already mastered good and clear dialog while simultaneously using vibrators so I know there's an issue here.

Still, even when just focusing on their AV star output, their titles are very popular--and this includes the releases we've shown by them on our site (check out our "Pompie" studio which is a company that goes joint-venture with Dreamroom a lot). At the end of the day, if what's working for Dreamroom is making them a lot of money, then it makes little sense in hiring more robust production staffs as that'd only hurt their bottom end. As a fan of AV though, I do wish they would put a bit more polish into their works.
