This one looked like garden variety old dufus hubby gets cheated on (wifey gets it on with the son, which is still typical JAV, haha). Most JAV ends it there, but in this one hubby catches them and it’s field leveling time. The promo stills suggest the typical plot but luckily I gave the trailer a chance, which admittedly spoils the “twist”.

I think you’re right about that, recalling another poster reminding us JAV is targeted at the Japanese audience. Vanilla NTR addresses the fantasy of going outside the norm (eg banging someone else’s hot wife/milf/gf etc) and rigid societal rules there. Field leveling is a reminder of the reality the house always wins, spoiling that fantasy with consequences.

I've been an active supporter of "twists" or even "leveling" in JAV for years.
As you stated, the overwhelming plots of JAV is cheating and NO consequences.

I will admit most of those "leveling or consequences" in JAV are hardly worthy but that's
probably a personal thing.

For me, it can be the husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend etc finding out about the cheating and kicking person out at the end. Or some type sexy revenge

More twists are needed.
Like for example, the titles where husband leaves, the
mom and son are having sex.
Why not have the husband come back, unexpectedly, and be piss off?
