Based on a true story set in pre-war Japan, a man and one of his servants begin a torrid affair. Their desire becomes a sexual obsession so strong that to intensify their ardor, they forsake all, even life itself.

Plot:
In 1936, in the midst of rising Japanese militarism, a former prostitute, Sada, goes to work as a maid in a brothel. The house's handsome owner, Kichizo, soon begins to court her, and Sada eagerly returns his attentions.
Their subsequent affair and constant lovemaking grow more and more intense, and their sexual obsession threatens to destroy them both.

It's a truly beautiful film, and a classic.

I love the egg scene....

I agree it's a great erotic movie, IMO one of the best ever.

BUT. After seeing the Japanese version with subtitles and then (accidentally) buying the dubbed-into-English version, I truly understood the meaning of that cliche, "It loses something in the translation." Think of the dubbing you've heard in old sex clips, where some actress is sitting in a room watching the film and making sex noise in sync with the action on screen. You get the idea. But it's a good story in either version.
