I think Tariba is saying he picked up a virus or spyware on his PC from a download. A rather vague statement though isn't it? The only thing I don't see as safe are some of the preview sites in the porn sections but I use safe settings,(no javascript), when I view them so I can't point out any specific site. There is a reason I don't surf just anywhere with javascript enabled:

I thanked all-a-y'all because reading this thread was the perfect antidote to the grave realisation that I'd spent one of my precious vacation days at work preparing for an upcoming event. I've never uttered this verbally or textually before, but to respectfully quote sportacus: "I lol'd." Slow would be an upgrade...you kill me, Ceewan.
Re: your sagely advice about Javascript...you're using Windows, may I presume? I'm just wondering if there's ever anything I need to worry about as a fat-and-happy Linux user. I leave it turned on all the time with Firefox, and in my 17-year exile from M$, I've never had any problems other than non-related annoying Chinese hackers bangin' on my Apache server. They just slam against the iris and vaporise like the Goa'uld did in StarGate. Am I just lucky, or am I missing something here?
Oh well...hey, Tariba: I hope you get your security issues sorted because AO really is a nice place to be. Sure, there are asshats in any crowd, but give us a little more info and I'm sure the community can help you out. Cheers, mate!

Javascript and most scripts allows executable code to be read by your browser this allows a virus or malware to attempt to infiltrate your system. There are additional steps to prevent this from happening but without javascript enabled often they will not be as necessary. Most pop-ups are executed via scripting, as well as timers that sites such as rapidshare use. There is nothing actually wrong with surfing with javascript enabled but porn sites and places that host porn sites are notorious for viruses and malware as they are often not well maintaned or are just plain malicious. Thus you increase your chances of infection by browsing these sites with javascript on and if you do and have not been infected then you are lucky or you might have something on your machine you don't even know about. The majority of sites are not malicious and contain at the most spyware of some sort or another either in cookie form or some other sort of information gatherer, there is a lot of money it seems in knowing where people surf. I don't like to be spyed on and viruses, worms, and trojans can ruin your day. So as a rule I surf with no scripting and cookies turned off, only making exceptions when the situation calls for them and removing cookies and cleaning browser info as soon as possible, (you never know what might be hidden in your browser cache). This is my personal preference though and it has served me well though on rare occasions it is inconviencing.
A note on "Chinese hackers":
Hackers and spammers do not use their real IP address, they mask it using proxies, proxy chains, onion routing, IP spoofing, or a combination of the same. Since China is still mostly a closed society and harder to trace connections to and from it is popular with spammers and hackers as an IP "mask".
