This latest incarnation of Shunkinsho is basically the 6th remake of the 1935 film Shunkinsho: Okoto to Sasuke which is based on the 1933 short story “Shunkinsho (A Portrait of Shunkin)” by Junichiro Tanizaki. Shunkinsho is popular story which even Japanese high school students know very well.
This romantic melodrama, set in Osaka, tells the story of Sasuke, the blind daughter of a wealthy pharmacist in mid-19th-century Japan (just prior to the Meiji Restoration). A born autocrat, she transforms her father’s apprentice into her lover and servant and teaches him to play the Samsien, a three-stringed instrument, for her pleasure. Another man who is a suitor for her hand, becomes frustrated that she will not consent to marriage thus mutilates her face. The apprentice/lover, on hearing of this, puts out his own eyes so that he will only be able to remember his love as a great beauty.
