Flying Battleship Anime

I have been trying to remember the tittle of an anime I saw a long time ago where the main character is hired as a teacher on a flying battleship. He ends up having to become there stratagist or something because the last one died. I also remember that the ship was run by a little girl and he was in charge of her aswell. Its not a lot to go on but if anyone can give me some possiblities that woulb be great. It came out before the sky girls OVA so for a year all i can say is late 90's early 2000's?

I think it had two 13 episode seasons. The crew were a group of young girls who fought by sommoning something but i forget what. His job was to teach them.
