The signs were very obvious however it’s too late to express regret over the death of a one-year old boy due to his mother’s neglect. The story is this: 29-year-old Yumiko Takahashi was arrested because she was so busy chatting online, that she neglected to tend to her ailing son. As a result the year-and-a-half old Neo died due to pneumonia and he was dead for more than a day before Takahashi realized what had happened.

This incident took place in June 26, 2011 and though Takahashi was arrested recently, her past track record should have been a warning enough for authorities to take some action, and maybe Neo would not have died at all. To give you Takahashi’s history, she divorced her husband in 2008 and moved to Otsu from Osaka. She brought with her Neo and his 6-year-old brother and was living off welfare. She had four children in total and two of them had died earlier. One of them died shortly after birth and the other accidentally fell off their Otsu apartment balcony in September 2009 and subsequently died. He was only four.
Takahashi history of neglect is legendary in her neighborhood. Neighbors often saw the two boys roaming in soiled diapers and were always hungry. One of the possible reasons’s for Neo’s death is that Takahashi never changed his diapers frequently and so he was constantly wet. This complicated his fever condition and pneumonia. Takahashi spent most of her time in chat rooms rather than tending to her ailing son. Her sole surviving son has been sent to foster care, and I suppose the scars will take time to heal. If it’s any solace, Takahashi has admitted to the charges levied at the time of arrest.
