Hi. I have a curiosity.
Why I see in the Japanese JAV movies a lots of christian symbols, like crosses, crucifixes, rosaries, nuns, etc. The Japanese people are not christians and they know almost nothing about the christianity. Why they use christians objects? What's the reason?
Some examples in the spoiler below

Actually Christianity has a long history in Japan. At one point Catholicism was quite huge there until the Shogun decided to exterminate all the Christians. Literally look it up. As a result of the slaughter most Christians went underground and there's still some weird remnants of how that ended up playing out historically. There's also a second wave of Christian Japanese too.

Combine that all with the general interest that the Japanese have in all things European and it's not surprising to see a lot of Christian imagery.

you should learn about Japan history ;)

birsha has made a good comment, and upcoming movie Silence (Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield) told about Japan in 17th century

Individually it might be just considered borrowing fashion from the west, like all the T-shirts and sweatshirts in English with American slogans, schools, locations, etc.

Lots of cool looking Japanese things that I have no cultural understanding of--I just appreciate their design. Maybe it goes both ways.

Also, the religious symbolism might also be a way of presenting the character in a given role. See if the girls wearing a cross are supposed to be innocent, or "good" girls. Wonder how often it shows up in IV videos?

In AV? It's fashion and looks cool and also can be used easier in occult settings. Buddhist and Shinto imagery mixed with AV may upset more viewers in Japan than Christian imagery.

Well there was the Kakure Kirishitan from the Edo period as mentioned, but that could have come to nothing if not for Japan perceives that it was USA (not the Allies including China and USSR) defeating them in WW2.

Traditional Japan is polytheist, so many many Japanese view Jesus as one more of the Gods that shouldn't be neglected. Many Japanese go to Shinto temples during the festivals, Buddhist temples on holy days and also go to Church on Christmas and Easter. They don't see worshiping at "pagan" temples as a mortal sin violating First Commandment. "Pure" Christians are smaller in numbers but still a fraction. I suspect they are responsible for Japan turning more conservative towards homosexuality, pedophilia and sodomy, adopting more Evangelical/Puritan outlook compare to traditional Japanese value.

I might say in pop culture, Christianity is probably the number 1 source of inspiration, edging out even Shintoism (and Animism). The classic Shinto/Animist anime is of course Inuyasha. The top Christianity-inspired anime/games in my head are: Blue Exorcist, Bayonetta, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trinity Blood. There are many more, but these are very Christian-centric, very popular, and quite good (IMHO).

Is it by coincidence that in all four, either Christian Church and/or the Christian deity are not necessarily the perfect model of Good? In some cases (Bayonetta), God and Angels are actually EVIL? Hmm that's a deeper issue...

Then there's also various Satanic and/or Occult/Pagan inspiration, such as Fullmetal Alchemist. Which are a lot of fun too.

In those wonderful examples of @Dagu I think the first vid with the crucifixes bikini is "accidental", it's just a (powerful?) symbol used for decoration, there's no special message.

The last vid, it's not very clear, the performer is a GAL or gyaru, from the (fake) skin color and facial expression. Could it be she just borrowed some Gangsta fashion motif without caring or understanding of the Catholic-Gangsta connection? It would help to know the DVD code so we can look into the rest of the vid to see if there's a stronger rebellious/blasphemy angle.

The second vid with the ritualistic bondage and (probably) r*** and torture, is intentional blasphemy, borrowing from Christian/Satanism for heightening the kinkiness.

Orientals have a less strict view of respecting religions. This is not a bias against foreign religions as @Inertia suggests. It's the polytheism. In polytheism, most gods and goddesses are not omnipotent and perfect good. They have flaws and desires and weaknesses and may make mistakes and do bad things. Even the Buddha himself wasn't a virgin. So orientals are fine about thinking of or making stories (Third Commandment) about gods, priests, monks and nuns having sex and performing "sinful" things. Also we don't think of Sex as inherently sinful. Many of the deities are not celibate. It may be a weakness or indulgence, but it's not something to send someone to hell and eternal damnation, like the Puritans say (Seventh and Tenth Commandment). Sometimes sex act itself is a religious or spiritual exercise (Hinduism and Taoism).

I am a big fan of religious porn. It won't be a bad idea to try to sustain this thread by sharing any religious-theme (Christianity, Satanism, occult/pagan, Buddhist, Shintoism, Hindu/Yoga/Kama Sutra, etc) AV that you come across.

Thank you guys for this cultural insight.
I really know about the history of christianity in Japan, Hideyoshi's ban and the subsequent Tokugawa Shogunate persecutions.
I'm watching a Taiga Drama right now. The 2013's Taira no Kiyomori.
But I was referring to the present day, when christians are less than 1% of the population.

But you made good points about the presence of the christian symbols in JAVs.
I don't know the movie's ID of the last picture. I just found it on the internet, but I think that I saw a movie in the same idea, with the naked male performer wearing a big rosary. It doesn't seem like it was an blasphemous intention, but the rosary was ostentatious.

It would be interesting to watch a non-abrahamic religious porn. Does this kind of movies exist?

let alone a moment's reflection on how fucked up it is to dangle an instrument of ancient capital punishment around your neck in the first place.

I get what you're trying to say here. But persecuted groups re-appropriating or re-defining a negative symbol or word is a time honored tradition. I don't really think it's fucked up at all.

Ahh... are you sure it is that low? 1% is probably lower than the population of Christians in China. Christianity is also significant in Korea.

I guess I didn't finish my first paragraph, after WW2, there was a huge flux of American influence (see baseball) to Japan, especially during the Occupation Period. I don't have a full picture, but even if truly converted Christians is low, at least the awareness and respect is much greater after the high (Imperial Japan) and low (defeat by Christian USA).

Sure there's a tendency to use religious symbols much more casually then the West. Orientals would be much more cautious about abusing or misusing symbols of authority, e.g. the Imperial House. But religions are much more accessible, common folks are much more comfortable about deities than about authorities. It's reverse in the West, Americans aren't shy to put the Stars and Spangles on underwear or draw their president as a monkey, but they are much more careful about religion (except when it's intentional, e.g. Kanye West). Think about Harry Potter, that world is very detail and comprehensive, even allowing a little bit of foreign cultures to show up here and there, but there's not a single hint of any religion or churches in either the wizard world or muggle world. I don't think JKR wish to avoid Christianity, but it's just too dangerous (politically incorrect) a can of worm to dive into. Using, abusing, misusing religious themes and symbols for Orientals (polytheists) is just less shocking.

The other idea I want test on you is: maybe the number of believers is small, but Japanese in general are quite aware and even knowledgeable of Christian lores. Or at least they like to dig through the pantheons of Christian (or any other religions that can strike resonance with audience) lores for deities and symbols and arcane knowledge and flood the audience with it. And opposite of American readers (remember they at first refuse to accept "philosopher's stone") , Japanese readers and audience love needing to study and learn in order to be entertained.

Shinto cosplay is still available (search "巫女"), Buddhist cosplay or (better) religious/historic pornodrama seems to be quite rare these days. I agree mostly with @Gokkun Punch but maybe it's a bit stronger than that. I can personally attest to "Catholic girls are more fun", especially when it comes to sex acts that eternally damn you to Hell! Human beings are programmed to take pleasure in forbidden. Eastern religions are too forgiving/permissive about sex so for a maximal high you can find it in the back end of a Catholic girl.

Oh... right I completely discounted the entire widow (未亡人) genre. Problem is I've never bothered to download one so I wasn't aware if there's any religious angle to it.

With Naziporn you are veering into non-religious territory. Anyway I love porn or AV in all kinds of religious/occult/historic/ritualistic elaboration. Bring it on!

yes. a fashion for the agnostic. yet for those within the faith, symbols have historically served as teaching tools for the illiterate, the wayward, the unorthodox, the doubting toshis. case in point here: ran monbu. she is a novice whose questions border the blasphemous. she wants to know whether --- since He can walk on water --- can He walk on sperm? in days of old, questioning the limits of the Lord might have gotten her burned at the stake. nowadays, such barbaric practices have been curtailed.

but she still gets fucked.

and those questions she had about isukiri and hachinohe? well, sometimes it’s just best to keep your mouth shut. the above chastisement is from real-044 which is posted here at A-O. but unfortunately, the links are dead and, absent a miracle, are likely to stay that way. however, a quick set can be located at:

That's the kind of thing that has to make me laugh at people that just "know" how Japan is. Just the other week I read a post somewhere in which a guy was complaining about the misrepresentation of Buddhist and Shinto beliefs in Western media. He went on to say that you will never see christian stuff in Japanese media because they are too "nice" and care about how Christians in other countries would feel about it, so they just will not use any Christan symbolism.

(and off topic) Just like the high school girl who was was upset about what her classmates thought about the way she dressed, and how she wished she could move to Japan and wear whatever she wanted to to school and everybody would just love and accept her for it.

I don't say that for japanese only, but for many other countries that have modern and open minded society

in conventional era, make porn or event nude picture without any religious symbol is big sin, so pro porn industry is impossible if the society are not open minded and very religious

The last pictures are interesting. It looks like there is an intention, let's say, ,,to swear" the christian(s') God.
